Confusing Media UK with another organisation

posted on Sunday 10th March at 21:25

A simple (I hope) suggestion to cut down on the number of people who think that Media UK is actually a newspaper/magazine/television/radio station….

When a forum member has less than 5 or 10 posts to their name and they start a new thread, after they submit their post perhaps they should be diverted to a page saying clearly in big letters saying something along the lines of “This is not the website of XXX. We are Media UK. You are not contacting XXX but are posting on a discussion forum about XXX. Are you sure you wish to continue.” followed by a confirmation link or a link back to the directory/website.

There is already the following when someone starts a new thread:

You’re not getting in touch with Heckmondwike Herald You’re posting a new topic in Media UK’s discussion area. If you want to get in touch with Heckmondwike Herald then please contact them diirectly through their own website.

Quite a few mistaken posts already get deleted – usually by James or me.

Yeah I know that Paul.

But people’s eyes seem to be focusing straight on the text box and skipping the warning. That’s why I think an additional page would be useful. If a user has 5 or 10 posts to their name, as I suggested, then chances are they know what Media UK is and don’t need an additional page.

Yeah, I was just wondering if you are going to repeat the first series of Black Books anytime soon?

From my point of view, we do what we can – pushing people through an interstitial page is possible, of course.

That said, these posts – when suitably edited – do spark off good conversation fairly often, so I’d rather not kill that off completely. We need to be encouraging more new posts here, not less! ;)

I suggested requiring approval from staff for the first thread that somebody posts, but as far as I’m aware that idea was not considered. It would definitely cut down on the visibility of such posts – And would stop such riveting media debate as the thread on Justin Bieber that’s coming up a lot on @mediaukdiscuss at the moment.
