MUK App?

posted on Friday 1st March at 21:01

I recall some debate over whether dedicated discussion forums like this are still relevant in the Facebook/Twitter era, and other questions why the forum is so quiet.

I wonder if one reason is the lack of an App? I’m sure I’d “snack” on MUK far more often if I had an app on my phone, especially if it did alerts. Personally I’d never do Facebook if MUK chose that direction, but what I do notice about Facebook users is that smartphone/tablets seems to be their hardware of choice – so could it be the same for MUK?

So why no app? I’m sure James is smart enough to do it. Maybe if time is the issue then free resources like this from Conduit could be part of the answer? There might even be some clever mobile-commerce opportunity in there as well.

Hi, Glyn,

We already have a great mobile app: visit www.mediauk.com from your mobile device, and you’ll find is optimised for mobile devices and works well. (It’s optimised for the iPad, iPhone, Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus). You can add a shortcut to your home page too.

I can’t quite work out what a mobile app would do that a website wouldn’t, to be honest. If you have any thoughts, I’d love to look at it.

I think the key thing an app gives is accessibility in places and at times you either don’t have a PC, or it is inconvenient to use one. I guess if you are talking about mobile optimised-site vs an App, then gives a single-button press access – I know in theory it is possible to create an icon that is a shortcut that opens a browser – but in practice how many people have the patience/knowledge to do that? (It’s a bit like your blogs on good radio player functionality).

True. And notifications for jobs, news keywords, and discussion replies might all be worthwhile.

I would also love an app for MediaUK – Ideally it should cache information, so I can read it on the train when I have no signal which is something a mobile website cannot do.

I’d download an Android app.
