Multi-page threads

The DAB car thread is now 80+ posts on one page.

James – any chance you can introduce a feature to create multi-page threads please? I’d have thought 20 per page would be a sensible number, but other members may have other views.

I would probably agree… 20 seems a sensible number. Anyone else?

I tend to prefer 50 per page, as I do prefer to see as much of a discussion as possible, but 50 seems longs enough.

It’s on the backlog, and I hope to add that shortly. It’s particularly difficult on mobile, so it would be nice to get that fixed.

Your wish, my command, etc. You’ll notice that we now have paginated discussion commments. (This one clearly isn’t… yet.)

A couple of suggestions that may improve this feature:

1) Would it be possible to have the page navigator at the top of Page 1 also? If I click on a thread with 25 replies or so and have already read Page 1, I have to scroll down to move on to the page I was up to. Not a big deal, of course, but having it there when the page loads would be more intuitive.

2) On @mediaukdiscuss, if the latest comment isn’t on Page 1, it would be nice if the link took me straight to the latest page. This would be a good feature in general, actually; Daniel Bateman’s recent comment linking to his comment instead of the first page, for example. (Of course, an absolutely ideal world would remember where I was up to and load the latest comment I had not seen, as the old discussion board did, but I realise that’s a big ask and would possibly have to involve cookies.)

Hey, Dave,

1. The page navigator is just below the initial post, for rather complex reasons. Quite difficult to fix that. I’ll see if I can work out how.

2. We link to the right page in email alerts already; but not from @mediaukdiscuss – you may not have read the rest of the thread. It would be nice to know when you were last active, and properly mark “new” items; I think that’s possible without too much hassle, actually.

Indeed; however, I tend to often not subscribe to the e-mail alerts, plus it’s reliant on making a reply first (as opposed to just following a discussion of interest without active participation).

I’ve just found a bug of sorts with the multi-page threads. This thread runs to seven pages but the navigation doesn’t go beyond three, meaning it’s impossible to view Page 4 and beyond unless you change the url (which works fine).

Many thanks, Dave – that bug’s fixed.
