New: editing posts and linking to comments

posted on Wednesday 15th February 2012 at 11:17

As requested by Mark McKenna and by Phil Edmonds we now have comment editing functionality. You’ll notice, if you leave a comment, you can edit it until anyone else comments after you. Editing functionality for new posts will follow.

Because many topics are quite long, I’ve been forced to say things like “interesting comment (towards the bottom)” when tweeting. This is less than ideal – so you’ll see tiny little # “permalinks” next to each post, which enables you to link to a particular comment if you like. I’ve done that above.

Ermm, I’ve either being dense or I need my eyes tested – how do you edit posts. I’ve just posted a new topic – and noticed that my web link wasn’t automatically changed into a link. Now I can’t spot an edit link to fix with [URL] tags.

Can you edit a ‘new topic’? Is something left behind from the facebook commenting system where topic ‘first posts’ where different to the ‘comments’?

You can’t, yet, edit new topics. Well spotted!

You can edit new comments, as you’ve spotted, by using the “edit this comment” link that appears next to the time in the topic header. This link only appears when nobody else has replied; and disappears once someone else has.

Weblinks aren’t automatically changed into a link – that’s not the Textile way. The way of linking is to type something like this (without the == signs):

"This is a link to Media UK":http://www.mediauk.com

...which displays

This is a link to Media UK

As an aside: you’ll notice that most links are edited manually (normally by me) if they’ve not linked properly.

Just posted a comment and noticed that the ‘edit this comment’ link has gone. So I guess this is a bug of some kind.

Let’s see if it displays this time…

.... and this is an edited comment where I do get a edit button and have written these extra bits

The one without a ‘edit’ link is on this page:

There’s also no edit option here, even though I’m (as of the time of posting) the last person to reply.

May I suggest a slight tweak to the edit system?

When you edit a post currently, you’re returned to page one of the discussion thread, regardless of which page your post was on. For example, I’ve just edited a post on page eight of a thread, yet ended up back on page one once I’d submitted the changes. It would be more intuitive if, instead, I ended up back on the page I had edited a post on.

Just a minor tweak, but it makes it easier to review how the changes look on the page (particularly important if I’ve been adding lots of code).

Good catch. Sounds like a good idea.

...and done. Apologies if you just got a blizzard of emails as I posted a few extra posts here to get to page 2. ;)

Since this is a re-heated thread, you might like to know that the ‘disappearing edit button’ bug referred to above is now fixed. You’ll also have spotted a slightly different commenting UX as of yesterday, too.
