New stuff - analytics, people, and more

James Cridland posted on Monday 26th November 2012 at 16:53We’ve had a good day of coding over the past few days, fixing stuff and making it better. Here’s what we’ve done…
Enhanced people pages
We now grab information from Wikipedia pages, as well as Twitter and Journalisted, to give the very best set of information about people in the media. Here’s Frank Skinner as an example – where you can now see snippets of information from Wikipedia, as well as links to his articles in The Times, and more details from Twitter, too.
Twitter users at…
Want to know how you stand in terms of Twitter? We’ve run our ‘top Twitter users’ charts for a while – here’s top newspaper users – but now we’re running Twitter pages for every media title we list. Here’s the Yorkshire Evening Post or the folks at BBC Radio Northampton.
Job analytics
When you post a job, you’ll discover that you can now see live analytics statistics, using a fun little graph that’ll appear for you (and just for you). It’s quite neat, and shows you exactly how many pageviews the ad has had.
Discussion analytics
Since we’d written the code, we’ve also added it to new discussion topics that you start. So you can see exactly how many people have seen your discussion topic, and when they came to the site. The best way to see this is to try it out for yourself!
We’re also running additional links to other things, to help you find your way around (there’s news stories on this page, for example, on the right-hand side); and you’ll discover you can now search Media UK direct from our daily email alerts.
We’re currently iterating Media UK’s source code multiple times a day, adding new features to help you. Feel free to post a new comment here to have your say on what we should be working on next – no need to register, just use your Google, LinkedIn or Facebook id. And by the way – you can see all releases as they happen on our release notes page which is in our footer.

This is a great feature, thanks. It would be good, however, to clear up how to submit Twitter handles for addition to the system; it seems clear cut to add your own, but when I submitted a list of others from a radio station with few entries previously they were not added to the system.
I know that when the initial Twitter feature was set up some years ago a lot of names that did not add themselves were included, but is the general rule now that new handles can only be attached by the individual themselves? (This does make sense from a privacy standpoint, but – especially with the increased prominence of the feature now – it would save people a lot of time if they knew batch lists of their title’s personnel would not be used.)
Additionally, I remember in the early days of this feature there was a calculation for the percentage of followers relative to the number of accounts that person was following themselves. This was very useful for spotting people that may have a lot of followers, but have attained this by following many personally; this seems to have been removed, but I did find that to be a very useful feature for noting those who had particularly organic social media influence.
