Car insurance for radio presenters

How do you get the best car insurance deals even if you work in the entertainment business? Users of the discussions area say what works for them...

"You're going to give Phil Collins a lift, so we need to up your premium"... the apparent real reason why car insurers like charging so much for people that work in the entertainment industry.

Companies to try...
Admiral: "DO insure broadcasters and are ‘reasonably’ priced" - Dave Martin
Cornhill: "They were great, paid up really quickly - the assessor even came to the radio station to get me to sign the forms." - Neil Sackley
Direct Line: "They're okay with me working in the media" - Dave Martin; "Came up with by far the lowest price this year - even after I double checked that they didn’t have a problem with the broadcasting industry." - Adam Porter
Egg: "I got a good quote from them a few years back and have stuck with them, it’s still the cheapest I’ve found and also if you buy on your Egg Card you don’t have to pay any interest on it. " - Olly Benson
Equity Insurance: "ask for Janice Butler" - David Baker
Esure: "Their view was that it didn’t matter a stuff what I did for a living. BUT they only insure over 30s now." - Neil Sackley; "I also recommend esure who eventually capitulated provided I don’t turn into a nationally-known megastar." - David Johns
Tesco insurance: "Complete the form online and you get a 5% discount, and they don’t ask what you do for a living." - Ben Weston; "I’ll second that - they did ask specifically what I did for a job and I told them, but explained I was in a small local radio station and eveything was okay." - Chris Oakley (but see below)
Privilege Insurance - Glen Hunt

Companies to avoid
AXA: "...apparently now DON’T insure anyone in the entertainment industry" - Dave Martin
Churchill: "They wouldn't even quote because I work in the media" - Neil Sackley
Eagle Star: "As I was involved in the broadcasting side, they were unable to insure me at all" - Adam Porter; "Eagle Star wouldn’t insure me either - for exactly the same reason. I mean, I know some punters don’t like me….but i’m not sure my traffic reports are particularly offensive." - Helen Blaby
Zurich: "Zurich would NOT insure me because I’m a broadcaster" - Dave Martin

Tips
"Your insurance may be cheaper if you include your partner." - Dave Martin
"One thing you can try is buy an older car and pop it on a ‘classic’ policy - obviously checking it covers you for commuting, regular milage etc. The insurers seem to be less picky about profession in the case of treasured classics. " - David Johns
"Check the small print if you sign up online: there may be a clause about working in the entertainment industry." - Jon Woodward (this is reported with both Tesco Insurance and Direct Line)
"Check if your union has an arrangement with an insurer" - Brian Winter
"If anyone takes out a motor policy and doesn’t tell their insurer their actual occupation– if you have an accident - even if it's not your fault - they will not pay out, because you lied / witheld valid information on your application and therefore you will have NO INSURANCE." - John Varnham
