The case against:

Unless you are on a very large commercial main line up with TV experience, the good agents will not take you on without TV credits, or if you're not on a national station.

Do you want to give someone 10-25% of your earnings for doing a job that you got? They don't always get the jobs any better than you may get them on your own... and many PCs hate dealing with agents as they get in the way from talking directly to the jocks. They have already decided on what they're going to pay - or what's available in the budget - and are usually unwilling to shift. The only exceptions are likely to be if you're already an established ratings-leader on that station and they don't want to let you go. So, in many cases, an agent pushing for more money for their client could be a waste of time.

The case for:

If you are all of the following then you don't need an agent or a manager and we'll see you on Radio 1 or Capital shortly...
- A fantastic broadcaster
- Working with an incredible programme controller who is developing your skills
- You are an amazing negotiator and have a good grasp of employment / contract law
- You can get a call back from almost any programme controller in the UK you fancy working for.
- You know exactly how to put your demo together and write great application letters.
- Everybody else needs help. This may come from friends / family or colleagues but if you are really serious about this business, then you need to invest in your future. Paying 15-25% commission to a good agent or manager is investing in your future.

A good agent will have a considerable standing in the industry. They will be experienced and will have great contacts. That means they will be earning good money. If they are taking you on they must believe you have talent and can help you up the ladder. They will not be interested in the £200 - £600 a month they take from you at the beginning. This is peanuts to any business worth it's salt. They are looking much further down the line when you are earning or approaching six figures. If you do go with an agent, remember, it's a team effort in which both parties benefit...and the winner will always be the jock as they get to keep 75% to 85% of the money!
