How to get rid of the 'press red' icon

Watch some channels on digital television, and you'll get a 'press red' graphic in the top-right of the screen. Here's how to get rid of it.

Some channels on digital television overlay a graphic to get you to 'press red': normally to give you more information, additional matches, or other multimedia excitement.

However, if you'd like to get rid of this, it's easy.

Freeview
Just hit the green button, and it'll disappear

Sky
You can hit the 'backup' button, and you'll wave the 'press red' goodbye

Freesat
Hit the green or black button (it differs by box) and 'press red' will be a distant memory

Virgin Media
Green? Black? No, on Virgin Media, you'll want the blue button to tell 'press red' where to go.

Additionally, on Sky, you can make this automatically disappear. In the EPG, hit "Services", choose "System Setup", "Picture Settings", and make "On-screen Icon Timeout"to be "ON". Then save your settings. This is apparently available in most, but not all, Sky boxes.
