The Times of India is the largest English-language newspaper in the world, with a circulation of 3.14 million, and a readership of just over 7 million. The newspaper is similar to the New York Times in look and feel (though doubtless the ToI and NYT would both disagree!)
The largest-circulating newspaper in the world in any language is the Japanese Yomiuri Shimbun with a circulation of just over 14 million.
In Europe, the largest-circulating newspaper is the German Bild (3.5m), followed by the UK's Sun (2.9m). Both are tabloid newspapers that lead on scandal and showbiz; and both carry photographs of topless women.
USA Today is the highest-circulated newspaper in the USA, at 2.2m; according to World Press Trends, it's the 13th-highest circulating newspaper in the world.
And, despite China's large population, its most popular newspaper, Reference News, has a circulation of 3.1m.
Sheer numbers are all very well; but, to put it another way, while one American in 139 gets a copy of USA Today, only one Chinese in 429 purchases a copy of Reference News - and one out of 21 Brits buy a copy of The Sun.
