It used to be so simple. Sun came out. Photographers armed with eggs set off for coastal towns and took pictures on the beach of girls paddling and men with knotted handkerchiefs sitting in deckchairs. They moved on to the promenade, where eggs were cracked and began to fry on the hot tarmac. Photo was taken of said egg frying in front of pretty girl. Back in London sub-editor produced headline "Phew what a scorcher" to place above fried egg and pretty girl. Job done. (more)

As of today, Allister Heath takes over the editorship of The Business, the weekly finance magazine owned by the Barclay brothers, the businessmen who own The Daily Telegraph. Until now, the magazine has been edited by Andrew Neil, who developed it from The Sunday Business newspaper and who remains editor-in-chief. Heath, aged 29, is also an associate editor of The Spectator. His scoops include revealing how Germany's tax burden is set to overtake Britain's, and the contents of the Conservative Party's Forsyth Commission report, which called for 21bn in tax cuts. (more)

Although Alexander Chancellor would be surprised to find himself anyone's mentor, he has to take responsibility for having given me my first job in journalism. After leaving Oxford, I spent six and a half years in publishing. Soon after I was sacked from my last publishing job in 1975, I bumped into Alexander. He mentored me through an evening of serious drinking and then offered me a job at The Spectator, where he had just become editor under the new ownership of Henry Keswick. None of us really knew what we were doing to begin with, so I suppose to an extent we taught each other. (more)
