In a letter to Press Gazette, the creator of magazine sharing website Mygazines has defended the venture against criticism from publishers and the PPA, who are concerned about copyright infringements on the site. "John Smith" - the name under which the website is registered - has said he wants to work with the industry to find new revenue models for magazines. (more)

Automated news - produced by machines for machines - is set to become an increasingly important part of the news agency's arsenal, according to a report released by Thomson Reuters. The news provider hopes the increase of such automated news, for financial information in particular, will free up journalists to write analysis of this info instead. (more)

Press Gazette: BBC iPlayer to be available on third-party websites

Press Gazette: GNM agree equal rights deal for print and online

Guardian News and Media has forged a deal with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), which will see its print and online journalists covered by the same terms and conditions. The new agreement includes improved terms on copyright, grievance and severance, Guardian managing editor Chris Elliot has said. A deal on multimedia working, settled between the parties in November, will also be incorporated. It also includes a clause on staff copyright, which will be retained by the company on all web content. (more)

Press Gazette: Mosley sues NoW in French courts over Nazi orgy story

Motorsport boss Max Mosley has launched a libel claim in the French courts against the News of the World over allegations he engaged in a Nazi-themed orgy. The UK Sunday newspaper alleged that Mosley had been involved in a London orgy with five prostitutes and posted video of the affair on its website. Moseley failed with a legal attempt in the English courts to get the video taken down and has now decided to pursue the matter in the French courts. The action has been made possible because the print edition of News of the World is available in France and the online version was also accessible. Moseley is also about to embark on a separate breach of privacy case in the UK. This issue has been scheduled for court in July. (more)

Press Gazette: Rusbridger says integration of Guardian and Observer will ‘unlock creativity’ of staff

The independence of the Guardian's three national titles - Guardian.co.uk, Observer and Guardian in print - will not be compromised by the integration of the news production process across the titles, editor Alan Rusbridger told the Press Gazette. Speaking ahead of a meeting tomorrow with staff to discuss the future of the newspapers, Rusbridger claimed that combining the titles would 'unlock the creativity' of his staff but that the distinct voices of each title would remain. Press Gazette: Express editor Hill leaves PCC after McCann libel payout

Daily Express editor Peter Hill has left the Press Complaints Commission. The move follows two months after his newspaper (along with its sister Sunday and the Star and Sunday Star) published front page apologies and paid the parents of missing child Madeleine McCann £550,000 in libel damages. He's replaced on the 17 strong commission by Mail on Sunday editor Peter Wright. (more)

Press Gazette reports McIntosh speaking at the opening of the Brighton Festival, where he said 'many millions' more visitors would be needed to the newspaper's website to sustain current levels of investment in journalism it is making on the web. The winners of the Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards were announced today at a lunchtime ceremony at the London headquarters of Reuters. The overall student journalist of the year was Felicity Hay of the University of Sheffield who was also named student news writer of the year. Other winners were: Student feature writer of the year: Robert Gibson, Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education. Student interviewer of the year: Julia Buckley, Harlow College. Student scoop of the year: Chloe Smith, Highbury College, Portsmouth. Student radio journalist of the year: Hannah Emerson- Thomas, Cardiff Journalism School. Student television journalist of the year: Ben Chapman, Cardiff University. Student online journalist of the year: Andrew Haigh, Cumbria Institute of the Arts. Student team of the year: Gravitas, University of Westminster. Student photographer of the year: Sarah Washbourn, Norton College, Sheffield. The event, now in its fifth year, is sponsored by Camelot Group plc, and judges for the final stages include Loaded editor Martin Daubney, ITN managing editor Robin Elias, Sun crime editor Mike Sullivan, LBC head of news Jonathan Richards and Reuters editorial training manager Nigel Stephenson.
