MSNBC Cancels "Imus in the Morning" Simulcast; CBS Issues Statement

Wednesday April 11, 2007
Fox News has just reported that MSNBC has canceled the "Imus in the Morning" simulcast of his syndicated radio show which is broadcast from the program's flagship station in New York City, WFAN-AM.

Earlier this week, Imus was suspended from his show for two weeks, beginning this Monday. Only today, Bruce Gordon, a member of the CBS board of directors, stated he wanted Imus fired from his radio show. Also today, three of Imus' sponsors pulled out of the program: Staples, Proctor & Gamble Co., and Bigelow Tea Company.

The latest from CBS Radio
This evening, CBS Radio issued this statement: "Don Imus has been suspended without pay for two weeks beginning on Monday, April 16. During that time, CBS RADIO will continue to speak with all concerned parties and monitor the situation closely."

One has to wonder if this isn't the beginning of a landslide of distancing which might eventually end in the show being completely canceled. (Right: Don Imus, Photo Credit: © WFAN-AM)

I’ve already emailed MSNBC. I will never tune into their network again for giving in to pressure. What an idiotic decision to cancel their highest rated show over one joke albeit a stupid statement.

I’m pretty sure CBS will follow suit and Imus will be gone. Watch how quickly he gets picked up by satellite. Imus’ fans will follow him and maybe we should boycott the networks and advertisers who have ruined him.

This is a sad end to an absurd situation. Every time I hear or watch a black comic or rap artist say worse things I’ll remember Imus.

I agree. It was the best political show on TV and certainly the best show on MSNBC.

This was a bad decision for MSNBC. We have watched all their news for years, and quite frankly, it all started because of Imus In the Morning. It was the best political show on the air. I enjoyed all of his guests and his way of expressing his own ideas. Sure he made a mistake, but he apologized. Does MSNBC really believe that they will survive without him!!!! I will miss him in the morning and hope that someone will be smart enough to pick up his show soon. Al Sharpton is a disgrace to his race.

Not only am I going to say good-by to MSMBC but also to NBC and let their local afiliate here in Ft Myers, FL know that I will find an alternative to their local news as well. Let’s start A ‘Boycot All Things NBC’! Movement - and NBC sponsors, too….

We also were drawn to MSNBC by the Imus show. With his help, they created a political/maverick reputation with Imus and Olbermann serving as bookends that supported the entire network. Now I doubt if I’ll watch Olbermann again. I hear that the employees sent emails in favor of dumping Imus. I hope they enjoy the slide.

I don’t know how people can continue to defend this guy. He seems to have no regard for anyon based on history. I actually thought perhaps his apology might be real until I read these other quotes Imus quotes on Wikipedia.

(7) Allura says:

His comments were disgusting and deplorable, and he deserves all the punishment meted out. OTOH, you’d have to search far and wide (like all the way to the White House) to find more sanctimonious hypocrites than Sharpton and Jackson.

In the end, just another MSM story to divert people’s attention from the war in Iraq that America started.

(8) Einzi says:

How hipocrital people can be. Sharpton and Jackson should look at their own history before picking on Imus.Where were the so called “Civil Rights Activists” when black people spoke and rapped about “Ho’s”? If Imus would have been a black guy, it would have been a non-event. I for one will drop NBC and MSNBC. Hopefully CBS will not fall in the same groove.

(9) John Fischer says:

Well, today and tomorrow a.m. are the chances for the people to speak with their wallets. The advertisers had their say yesterday and CBS will soon also. The radiothon for the CJ Foundation for SIDS, Tomorrow’s Childrens Fund, and The Imus Ranch for Children with Cancer is running now and the good news is that donations are up and there is huge support for Don. You can make a donation at this URL.

(10) Carl Richards says:

I was a long time viewer of Imus. Now that we is gone so am I. Perhaps you could replace him with Jesse Jackson and or Al Sharton. See how much revenue that would bring in.

(11) pam says:

I was on another site today, there were over 700 blogs mostly in favor of MAJOR boycotts. I will join them. I just wish “whities” could stand up and complain but then we are called racist. The news will not run anything like that because it would be politically incorrect. FIRST AMENDMENT HELLO!!!
Another thing Whoopie Golberg has a company called ONEHO in two words written in english not ebonics means ONE WHORE She is upset again why?

I want to say that if they take off the I man he could come back and be more powerful than ever. There is negative things said and done on all the stations.

(13) jd says:

I agree he shouldn’t have said what he said. I just wish black men got the same treatment when they degrade women. Where’s the Equal Penalty Clause?

April 12, 2007 at 5:38 pm
(14) Ramone Johnson says:

So Imus should stay because hip-hop artists demean black women? It’s silly to say Imus should be allowed to call a black women a ho since rap artists call women hoes (as if hip hop artists represent all of Black America). And must we forget the “nappy-headed” part? The term nappy-headed was frequently used by slave masters and segregationists to describe African-Americans.

Maybe you guys should channel the energy used to boycott MSNBC and “pressure” all media that allows individuals to denigrate females.

(15) Jack Ho says:

Everyone is giving Imus too much credit as a broadcaster. He has historically had poor ratings and few listeners. If you don’t like what he says, turn him off.
Since the wife of the BET founder sounded off on this, I hope that she and her husband are deep in the process of taking off the air all music shows and award shows and comedy shows on BET that have in the past allowed performers to use words similar to Imus’ and worse. The directors and administrators of these shows should be fired on the spot. Or, do these shows bring in too much money for BET. If they are not hypoctites Sharpton and Jackson will be at BET headquarters with a protest in the morning.

(16) barb says:

I am not even an Imus fan, and I think all this hoopla is way out of proportion. If you don’t like him, turn the dial. The great things he has done and is doing far outweigh the stupid comments he blurts out. (He and especially Bernie have been doing this for years.) He apologized, take him off the air for a week, and get over it.

(17) J. Thomason says:

MsNBC and CBS are crazy for listening to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. It was for that reason this big push to cancel a great radio show came about so fast. I have heard so much worse from Imus critizing white people that a suspension would have been plenty. Everyone knows this deep down, Imus should not take the fall for the direction that are youth are leading us because of us and not Imus. He teaches alot of us to fight back (including young African-Americans)that he helps along with other ethnic and minority children. So He that is with out sin throw the first stone.
