User-generated channel Current TV has commissioned a raft of films pitched at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Over 40 producers pitched for a commission from Current TV, with eight now in production to be broadcast on the channel before the end of the year.

Davide Scalenghe, who manages the outreach programme for Current TV's Viewer Created 2 strand, said: "The calibre of pitches was extremely high and it was an extremely difficult task to choose the final eight winners. Hopefully the winners reflect the high quality and wide range of topics that were presented to us at EIFF and we look forward to working with these talented producers to turn their ideas into reality."

The ideas included a film called Is University Worth It? looking at whether the decision to go to University is a good career move; Jamie Stone's Happiest Five Minutes which shows what happens to people’s faces when asked to pinpoint the happiest five minutes of their lives; The Paper, which sees Bryan McPhail and Steve Quinn observe a struggling student newspaper; and The Cat Man of Greenock, which follows David Newbigging exploring a local Scottish myth.
