‘Frenetic sales’ for new weekly Bath Chronicle

The Bath Chronicle’s first weekly edition hit the newsstands last Thursday, with stockists and distributors struggling to keep up with the demand.

The Northcliffe Media Group-owned paper, which will celebrate 250 years of publishing in 2010, has switched from a daily to a weekly frequency, leaving Bath without a daily newspaper.

The Chronicle’s neighbour and fellow Northcliffe title the Western Daily Press is planning to launch a Bath edition using four Bath-based journalists to meet the demand for daily news.

The 246-page new-look Bath Chronicle costs 30p for the first four weeks and 60p after that. Official sales figures will not be available for some weeks.

But deputy editor Paul Wiltshire said that initial reaction in the city had been better than expected.

“We’ve been hearing from supermarkets and newsagents that our newspaper sellers have been frenetically busy, especially in the first couple of days.

“I think at the moment it’s exceeding our expectations.”
