An apology was broadcast on BBC 6 Music today, Sunday 27 January 2008.
This is the text of the apology:
"On the Russell Brand show broadcast on BBC 6 Music on Sunday 9th April 2006, listeners were invited to text in to a competition. The impression was given that the programme was 'live' but, in fact, the programme was recorded, and the 'winner' featured on the show was a member of BBC staff.
"The BBC accepts this was a decision taken by the production team, and that Russell Brand was unaware of what had happened.
"6 Music would like to apologise, and we will be contacting listeners, who took part in the competition to offer them compensation for the cost of the text."
