The company:
Columbus Travel Media creates in-depth and trusted travel content for content licensing and bespoke clients as well as publishing a large number of online destination guides on the World Travel Guide website. The quality of the content is key to Columbus Travel Media’s commercial success.
As well as being an excellent editor, the successful candidate will be comfortable further adapting the copy to the web and generating and implementing new ways to improve the website and content management system, as well as help drive traffic to the site.
He/she will also be creative, innovative and a superb project manager, capable of balancing the requirements of readers, advertisers and content licensing clients. Columbus is introducing a number of innovative new products as part of a drive to improve both the website and the ways we provide content for clients, so exceptional knowledge of web 2.0 is essential.
The job:
- Take overall responsibility for four different websites across four languages
- Run an enthusiastic editorial team of two commissioning editors and one assistant editor plus a German, French and Spanish translator/editor based overseas
- Manage the city guides, from commissioning to publication, with the help of a commissioning editor
- Ensure the timely delivery of all projects
- Be main editorial point of contact for other departments
- Take a lead role in coming up with and implementing site improvements, from blogs to modifying the content management system
- A superb editor, with experience in a commissioning editor role and of managing at least one person and a number of projects simultaneously
- Exceptional knowledge of web 2.0 and SEO
- An excellent project manager and communicator
- A keen traveler (armchair or otherwise)
- Up to date with the latest travel trends
- Tireless, diligent, enthusiastic, creative and open to new ideas
- Adapts quickly to house styles
- Fluent in more than one language (desirable)
0900 Team meeting: update other departments on developments within editorial and, in turn, listen to sales and web teams’ plans for the week ahead.
0930 Communications: respond to e-mails from the rest of the team and contributors, provide a bespoke quotation for a potential client, and scan through press releases.
1030 Editing: edit news stories for the commissioning editors (or get them to do each others), edit final version of the weekly newsletter before it’s sent out at lunchtime, edit and/or publish a city guide and send any queries to the author.
1300 Lunch!
1400 Project: research potential new idea(s) and give feedback to CEO.
1500 Commissioning: source and commission new or existing contributors to update a guide or homepage features/reviews
1600 Meeting: this could be an editorial team catch-up, a brainstorming session with other heads of departments or a one-on-one with the CEO or a member of editorial.
Interspersed with all this: read travel industry and consumer news and features; write/commission and edit homepage content; answer off-the-cuff questions from the Columbus team; keep on top of any press releases Columbus/WTG could send out; help plan homepage, newsletter and review schedule; listen to and try to resolve any issues within the editorial team within the UK and overseas; manage interns and contributors; maintain and oversee editorial budget; and plan destination guide update schedules.
