Research analyst, Media Analytics Ltd - England

This job is located in Oxford, England (map)

As an analyst, you would work closely with a team on our market intelligence reports and consultancy projects. You would be a key team member, researching the fine detail while being aware of the big picture.

Typical work activities would include:

  • Picking up the essentials of a new field quickly through background research.
  • Collecting and analysing data and information from published sources, proprietary sources and interviews conducted with industry experts.
  • Working out what "stories" the data is telling in order to build up a picture of both the current marketplace and what is likely to happen in the future.
  • Writing sections of our reports to communicate these findings to an appropriate audience (e.g. consultancy clients, investors, water sector specialists, etc).

Requirements:

  • Highly numerate, with an ability to "join the dots" across different datasets and make the kinds of connections that "speak a thousand words".
  • Good communicator, with an ability to explain ideas to a variety of audiences (or a capacity to learn quickly through editorial support and feedback if writing experience is currently limited).
  • Good attention to detail, taking pride in a high quality end-product.
  • A team player who delights equally in sharing with and learning from others who are working on the project.
  • Strong problem-solving and IT skills.
  • Some programming experience would be desirable though not essential.
  • Salary dependent on experience.

How to apply:

Send your answers to the two questions below, together with your CV, to Heather Lang by 20 February 2012, mentioning that you found this job on Journalism.co.uk.

Global Water Intelligence, The Jam Factory, 27 Park End Street, Oxford, OX1 1HU

Question 1

1. Calculate what a residential customer with a 3/4" meter who lives in the City of Charleston would be charged for water and sewerage if they used 15 cubic metres of water in the month of July 2011. Use the rate chart given in the version of this job advert at http://www.globalwaterintel.com/careers/#research-analyst. Annotate your calculations (which can be handwritten, in a document, in Excel, etc. as you choose) explaining what you have done to get your answer and, if necessary, any clarifications you would ask for.

Question 2

You are working with a colleague on a tariff survey. This involves collecting information about water and sewerage tariffs for 320 cities worldwide, and calculating what a 15 cubic metre per month "benchmark user" would pay in each city. Your colleague is less confident with numbers than you are, and is not quite sure how to go about the kind of calculation you've just done in question 1.

Write some brief notes (no more than a page) for your colleague saying how to go about doing calculations like these, including the potential problems or issues they might encounter. The notes would be used as the starting point for you sitting with your colleague and going through some examples with them, and also as a 'checklist' for them to look at as they go on to collect tariffs for other cities and do similar calculations.
