About the role:

Sky at Night Magazine – the UK’s biggest monthly space and astronomy magazine – is looking for a talented staff writer. With your thorough knowledge and passion for astronomy and astrophysics, you will write news and features for the magazine, as well as commission external writers to produce great copy for us. You will also join the magazine team in brand extensions, such as podcasts, videos and consumer shows. 

This position would suit a current science journalist or a recent graduate in the field of astronomy or astrophysics looking for a career in science journalism. First and foremost, you will have a close knowledge of these fields and be keen display this in your writing.

Sky at Night Magazine is published by Immediate Media Co, under license from BBC Worldwide. The magazine has close links with the BBC TV programme, The Sky at Night.

Reporting to:

The Editor

Key responsibilities:

• Writing and copy editing magazine features and articles

• Contributing ideas for magazine features, articles and brand extensions

• Planning and commissioning features, news and other elements of the magazine

• Proofreading magazine pages for grammatical and factual accuracy before they go to print

Skills and experience required:

Essential

• Educated to degree level

• An in-depth knowledge of astronomy or astrophysics

• Experience of writing features and articles for newspapers and magazines

• Impeccable spelling and grammar

Desirable

• Qualification in astronomy or astrophysics

• Practical experience of observing the night sky and astrophotography

• Commissioning skills

• Knowledge of InDesign
