Children & Young People Now, the leading magazine and website for children's professionals, is looking for a sharp and experienced news journalist to sniff out exclusives and get involved in news editing. The bread and butter of the role is to generate ideas for news stories and analysis articles and turn these into high-quality copy for the fortnightly print publication and daily web bulletins. The successful candidate should be ambitious to develop a career in B2B publishing and move into news editing, as the role will require deputising for the news editor on occasions.
Day-to-day duties include:
- Generate ideas for and write high-quality stories and analyses to agreed deadlines for print and online
- Upload online stories and images to the CYPNow content management system
- Contribute to the fortnightly good practice section in the print magazine
- Build and maintain a strong bank of contacts for your beats
- Keep abreast of all policy changes relating to your beats
- Keep an up-to-date news diary
- Attend events and conferences as required – occasionally outside working hours
- Edit copy and deputise for the news editor where necessary
- Be familiar with social media as a tool to generate story leads, engage with readers and promote CYPNow coverage and brand

- Demonstrable track record in news and analysis writing
- Excellent news sense
- Strong interest in politics and public policy
- Ability to think creatively about news and analysis ideas
- Knack for generating innovative follow-up angle
- Competitive desire to produce exclusives and scoops
- Unwillingness to accept second best
- Driven by a commitment to punctuality and deadlines
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Good organisational skills and ability to juggle competing deadlines
- Ability to build and maintain a wide range of contacts
- Desire to take ownership of your own beats
- Commitment to a high journalistic standards and fairness
- Ability to work in partnership with fellow reporters and share information when required
- Understanding of the needs of the title’s readers
- Ambitious to develop news editing skills
- Good understanding of media law
