OVERVIEW
The position is for an experienced energy reporter based in London with a proven track record in producing original news stories and analysis on the financial and operational strategies, performance and investment of a wide range of European-based major oil companies and independents. A sharp focus on M&A and organic growth strategies as well as peer group analysis are critical dimensions to the beat. In addition, an understanding of the interplay of the equity markets for energy companies and global oil and gas markets and derivatives is required. The position also involves providing regular assistance in editing corporate coverage by other reporters and writing opinion pieces about recent trends in the corporate sector for our weekly corporate newsletter, EI Finance. The applicant should have good familiarity with analyzing financial reports, strong numerical analysis skills, and be able to produce copy with original perspectives and insights according to tight deadlines.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting/Writing
* Work as part of our two-person London corporate reporting team to cover the European-based corporate oil and gas sector, with a focus on both integrated majors such as BP, Shell, Total and Eni and smaller independent upstream and downstream companies. This will involve coverage of both developments in strategy and investment at individual companies and broader cross-sector trend pieces
* Provide regular news stories, analysis pieces and editorials for our weekly corporate oil and gas sector newsletter, EI Finance.
* Provide stories and analysis on corporate oil and gas developments for our other newsletters, specifically International Oil Daily and Petroleum Intelligence Weekly.
* Attend weekly EI Finance and company-wide editorial meetings to help plan coverage of corporate oil and gas sector.
* Attend conferences, corporate presentations and other industry events as required in London and overseas in support of our coverage.
Editing
* Provide support to editor of EI Finance in terms of editing some stories and helping with layout.
You will also be required to carry out any other duties which may reasonably be required of you.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
* Proven track record as an energy journalist
* Good clear and concise writing style
* Good numeracy skills and understanding of how financial markets work, particularly equity and commodity markets
* Strong critical and analytical skills
* Ability to develop original story and analytical ideas and see angles our competitors don’t.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
* Good interpersonal and communications skills to facilitate cooperation with colleagues in London bureau and overseas.
* Language skills useful but not essential
