The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for paying pensions and benefits, helping people to find a job and looking after their health and safety when they’re in work. With a workforce of over 100,000 people, our Internal Communications team make sure that our staff have the information they need, at the right time to do their jobs efficiently.
DWP is looking for two experienced writers to join our award-winning Internal Communications team.You’ll be part of a close-knit writing team working on online and print articles.
As well as providing expert guidance and advice for content creation, you will also be responsible for your own pages within the new staff magazine and DWP intranet. You will source and write news articles and features across a wide range of subjects from hard business issues and key changes in welfare reform to lifestyle pieces on life beyond the office.
Ideally suited to a writer who thrives on deadlines and is able to work with a variety of demanding stakeholders, you will work closely with our managing editor and design team to develop and improve DWP’s online and print channels, using our audience research to ensure we are meeting the needs of our staff.
You’ll have excellent organisational skills, as well as the credibility and tact to deal with senior management, including policy officials and ministers. A talented wordsmith, you’ll be adept at turning corporate material into copy that staff will find interesting, engaging and entertaining. Experience of writing for online publications is essential. Experience of internal communications would be an advantage. You should be able to work on your own initiative, as well as collaboratively with a variety of teams across the Department.

This role will require you to:
- Write, edit and proof articles for the Department's magazines, corporate brochures and intranet sites, in addition to business-specific newsletters
- Upload content daily to the intranet using a content management system
- Conduct interviews with story owners, and gain appropriate approval prior to publishing including associated pictures. Liase with senior managers such as the Permanent Secretary and ministers’ private offices for news articles
- Provide on-location reporter coverage for internal and external events
- Apply professional journalistic expertise to help DWP deliver its messages to and from staff in an informative, engaging and clear way
- Propose content ideas to the Managing Editor
- Arrange for text approval before publication, work quickly and accurately to deadlines
- Undertake regular picture research and editing, and help maintain the currency and breadth of available imagery in an internal photo library
- Take photographs for stories when required.
