Media UK

Website editor, Civil Society Media Ltd - United Kingdom

This job is located in London, United Kingdom (map)

Civil Society Media is seeking an editor for its new website, www.civilsociety.co.uk.

Just launched in November 2009, www.civilsociety.co.uk houses all the content from our four magazines – Charity Finance, Fundraising, Governance and Civil Society IT -  as well as additional specially-commissioned online-only articles and resources.

It boasts a comprehensive directory of civil society organisations and a unique ‘Who’s who’ section containing profiles of prominent sector people.  It is also the new home of Civil Society Events and Civil Society Jobs, the website for anyone seeking work in the sector. More exciting new features are planned this year.

The site is updated daily with news, blogs and features written by our team of journalists, as well as contributors from within civil society. We pride ourselves on producing a stream of exclusive hard-hitting news stories, best practice guidance, information and intelligence about all aspects of civil society.

We have had fantastic feedback on the site since its launch and now we need someone to take ownership of it and take it to the next level. You will already have some experience of working in an online news environment, ideally as a sub-editor and possibly as a reporter too. You will understand the need for speed and accuracy and thrive on the pressures of deadlines. Your attention to detail will be second-to-none and you will have a healthy competitive streak.

You will ensure that every part of the website is properly presented, that copy is written for maximum impact online and conforms to house style, and that images are relevant.

You will work with other members of the Civil Society team to create regular eNewsletters and promote our content on social networking sites. You will also be responsible for managing the Who’s who section. You will deliver regular analytics reports to relevant teams and you will monitor what our competitors are up to. You will also be able to write news.

You will need the following technical skills and knowledge:

Essential

  • Content Management System experience
  • Photoshop – working with images for web use
  • Dreamweaver
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional – extracting content from pdfs
  • Web accessibility, SEO, using social media in publishing
  • HTML – comfortable with editing HTML code

Preferable

  • E-marketing software/best practice/legal framework – producing newsletters
  • Indesign

Knowledge about the intricate workings of the voluntary sector is not essential, but an interest in charities, a willingness to get stuck in, and a sense of humour definitely are.
