Visual editor, The Future Laboratory - United Kingdom

This job is located in London, United Kingdom (map)

The role of LifeStyle:News (LS:N) visual editor is key to ensuring that LS:N Global is a visually compelling network designed to drive our clients’ businesses forward in a powerful, innovative and visually impactful way.

The visual editor will therefore work with, and report to, LS:N Global’s editor to generate visual stories, ideas, trends and angles that address new and emerging shifts in the lifestyle industries that are relevant and useful to network members.

The visual editor will also ensure that all visual content articulately explains and unpacks the network’s (often visually driven) case studies, news stories, market features, trend and inspire sections – and in a way that adds extra insights and meaning to the written content it contains.

He/she will also be expected to create, develop and pitch their own visual stories for sections such as Innovate, Markets, Tribes, Seed, Inform and Inspire etc, and to work with the other network editors, writers and trend researchers to visually bring this work to life.

At all times they will need to be proactive, and fully engaged in the network’s overall visual output, as well as overseeing, managing and working on all associated presentations, sector reports and publications.

They will oversee and manage the output of the LS:N Global visual team, including its

  • visual trend researchers,
  • section heads,
  • all design writers and visual freelance correspondents and contributors

on a day to day basis, with a view to establishing a visual coherence, impact and distinct LS:N Global style that sets it apart from, and above, other networks and sites. They will ensure that all work is delivered on time, and to the agreed brief.

They will ensure that all ideas are market-driven and focused on the key aims of LS:N Global: to provide members with visual insights that challenge accepted views, set agendas and, most importantly help our members to be more attuned to consumers, more profitable and more innovative by presenting them with brands, products, or innovations they can learn from or imitate to gain market traction.

The ideal candidate could:

  • come from a visual planning background
  • have previously worked as a trend analyst
  • have been a senior visual planner at a major design, branding, publishing or  visual planning agency
  • have a strong visual-editing background in print and/or online publications
  • be aware of how and what makes a good visual news story, and how visuals should be used to add value (as opposed to merely illustrate) and added insights to all network content.

They will be required to guide, and collaborate with, the editorial team to ensure that all content across the site is exemplary and visualized in a way that allows members to appreciate the dual benefits of the network – that it is stunning in terms of the visual and written insights it contains.

The successful candidate will also manage, mentor and oversee the output of LS:N Global’s trend researcher(s) and its picture assistant/uploader to ensure that all uploading, picture research and contributions to stories fit the remit of the network.

They will also be required to:

  • have and develop a strong lifestyle-industries contact list, with a view to generating unique, original, sometimes exclusive story leads – via industry contacts, trade shows, conferences, lifestyle events, design fairs etc – and a body of visual work that distinguishes LS:N Global visually from competitor networks and sites
  • contribute to the overall LS:N Global team output with a view to delivering lifestyle trends analysis, design forecasting and visualisation of trends that strengthens the network’s overall authority and impact
  • monitor, identify and analyze trends as they develop globally
  • work on presentations / client projects and other client-related image requests as and when required to ensure that all LS:N Global presentations and associated products and services, such as our bi-annual Trend Briefings and our Futures and Market reports, are of a high visual standard, and of a calibre that adds further layers and insights to the textural insights and information these reports contain
  • be responsible for the excellent organisation and management of materials in use by the team (e.g. tears, press visuals, etc), and to present research findings and analysis internally.

The successful candidate should also possess the necessary research, analytical and visual planning knowledge to conduct in-depth research for presentations and LS:N Global-related projects identifying trends across a wide range of sectors including (but not limited to): retail, interiors, luxury, packaging, beauty, fashion, design, culture, art, architecture.
