Freelancer, Garnett Keeler Public Relations - England
This job is located in Carshalton, Surrey, England (map)
We need experienced, reliable, flexible all-rounders with high levels of proven journalism and PR competence to provide overspill capability for us across the board. It will count greatly in your favour if you have fluency in any mainstream European languages but this is not a requirement and your mother tongue must be English. These positions will not usually be client-facing.
Once you have been appointed as a ‘preferred freelancer’ you may be called upon to support projects from any part of the company. The amount of work you get will to a large extent depend on you - if our directors/senior account handlers see you as a reliable and useful resource, they’ll make more use of you.
You’ll need to be able to do - or contribute to - pretty much anything in the PR arena, so these are not roles for beginners or recent graduates. The work may include writing press releases and articles, research work on new clients, contributing to pitch documents, working on client award entries, crisis and issue management, supporting event management operations etc. The account base is international (a great deal of work for US, European and Asian companies), with a transport practice which is focused on the UK domestic market (some European work). We also have digital and ‘moving image’ (video) operations which may occasionally call on your services.
We want highly productive writers and creative thinkers who can work (sometimes) from a hurried (often telephoned) brief, possibly from account handlers who are travelling/abroad. You’ll know what questions to ask, understand how to put a story together, and you’ll be able to get to grips with any topic ranging from the technical aspects of commercial vehicles to the workings of a pharmaceutical drug, to pick two examples at random. You don’t necessarily need to be a transport or pharmaceutical specialist (we’ve got both already), or have specialist knowledge in any of the other areas in which we operate, but you will probably have to support people who are.
These positions are suitable for home-based freelancers who are available throughout the working day and it is highly probable that home working will be acceptable since the vast majority of the work will be ‘desk based’. However, our account handlers travel a great deal and on occasions when the office is short-staffed you may be asked to work in Carshalton; you may also be asked to attend for meetings, briefings etc. Frankly, it’s also a fact of life that you’ll probably pick up more work if you’re willing to pop in fairly regularly. For all these reasons you should live within reasonable commuting distance.
We’ll want to see evidence of a good general education in genuine academic subjects (if you have a science, engineering, technical or modern languages degree it will work in your favour, but don’t be discouraged from applying if you haven’t). We’d also like to see evidence of formal training in either journalism or PR (recognised training courses with media organisations, or perhaps NCTJ or equivalent; or CIPR membership / diploma etc).
Full details of our company are available on an extremely comprehensive website (www.garnett-keeler.com).
Recruitment: you’ll undertake one interview plus some practical assessments, then be given some (paid) trial work; the trial work will be the real decider. Please do not telephone (sorry but we are too busy) – almost any question you could ask about the company is answered on the website.
