Guardian: Channel 4 ponders move into regional news

Channel 4 is mulling over the a possible move into the gap in regional news broadcasting left by the retreat of ITV services. The broadcaster is in discussion with Ofcom and ITV about investing funds in regional news services and infrastructure - a move which could strengthen its public service broadcasting hand. (more)

Guardian: James Murdoch calls daily/Sunday integrations ‘cost-cutting exercises’

James Murdoch has spoken out against integrating daily and Sunday newspapers into seven-day operations, dismissing the process as "cost-cutting exercises". He told staff at its UK newspaper division News International that the introduction of integrated seven-day operations in Britain had "diminished daily and Sunday rivals". (more)

MediaGuardian: Huffington Post plans local news expansion

The Huffington Post is to expand its coverage to local news in the US. The plans will start with a site for Chicago, aggregating news from different local sources and with contributions from local bloggers. The site will be overseen by one editor. Online video content should be required to meet the same standards as television, Andy Burnham, culture secretary, told a media seminar yesterday. Burnham suggested including warnings on footage containing bad language, violence or sex. "If a clip on YouTube gets a million hits, it is akin to broadcasting and it doesn't seem to me to be too difficult to have an alert on that clip with regards to language or violence or for sex. That to me is not overly intrusive," he said. (more)

Timothy Balding, chief executive of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), responds to an earlier blog post by Roy Greenslade, which questioned the rising print circulation figures recently presented by the association. Richard Bambrook, the British National Party's London Assembly member, has used the paper's MyTelegraph platform to publish an anti-immigrant blog post. A spokeswoman for the Telegraph said the presence of the post on the site did not mean the paper endorsed Bambrook's arguments and that readers are relied upon to report offensive material. "Our readers are entitled to their opinions and, within the law, they're entitled to publish them on the My Telegraph blogging platform," she said. (more)

Siegel explains how an unmoderated policy towards comments on his blog for New Republic led him to defend his posts under a pseudonym. "I was called a hypocrite, naturally, once my cover was blown, though the way I see it, an advocate of gun control who shoots an armed assailant is hardly a hypocrite. The independence of the Guardian's three national titles - Guardian.co.uk, Observer and Guardian in print - will not be compromised by the integration of the news production process across the titles, editor Alan Rusbridger told the Press Gazette. Speaking ahead of a meeting tomorrow with staff to discuss the future of the newspapers, Rusbridger claimed that combining the titles would 'unlock the creativity' of his staff but that the distinct voices of each title would remain. Guardian: Thomson Reuters axes 140 journalist jobs

News and information company Thomson Reuters has confirmed that it is cutting 140 journalist posts by the end of the year. According to the Guardian, head of news David Schlesinger wrote an internal email which explained that areas of "natural overlap and duplication in coverage" existed between the two companies and that as a result jobs would go. The cuts, which will take place later in the year, are expected mostly to be of editorial staff in Europe. (more)

Nearly 15 million people - 44 per cent of UK internet users - visited newspaper sites during March, according to ComScore web metrics. The Guardian says that ComScore figures suggest that Sun Online was the most visited UK newspaper site by residents of this country, recording 4.3 million unique users, with Guardian.co.uk second with at 3.6 million. The Times website wants to carry more video content from Sky News. Times Online editor-in-chief, Anne Spackman, told MediaGuardian.co.uk that negotiations to make this happen were at an early stage on the newspaper website carrying breaking news videos from Sky. Any deal is likely to improve the online video offering from the Times. Despite being one of the first national newspapers to adopt a TV service the Times offering has fallen behind other nationals - in terms of quality - and seems to be due an overhaul. (more)

Guardian: Pluck picks up Hearst website deal

Social media firm Pluck will supply technology to Hearst Digital's uber-web portal Allaboutyou.com It will provided blogs, discussion tools and media-sharing applications to the new community site for women, which combines content from six Natmag's UK tiles. Strong news stories and improved online production operations were behind the traffic surge to Telegraph.co.uk last month. The site recorded a 38.69 per cent month-on-month increase in unique users, according to the ABCE figures released last week. Guardian: Mirror Group websites join ABCe

Mirror Group Newspapers will this week begin reporting traffic to its websites by making public the results of monthly ABCe. Traffic for the People, Sunday and Daily Mirror will, for the first time, be judged against that of the other leading newspaper brands when the figures are released on Thursday- all accept for the Independent, which still refuses to make its traffic figures public. According to the Guardian, Trinity Mirror has admitted to having some reservations about the ABCe methodology but is still playing ball. It expects to record a high percentage of its traffic from a domestic audience - unlike the leading UK newspaper websites of The Guardian and The Mail, which draw the majority of their traffic from overseas.
