Magazine readers fed up with D-list people
From The Times. Posted February 14 2008, 12.00am
For years, they have been falling out of stretch limos and Essex nightclubs
and into the affections of millions. Now, however, Britain’s love affair
with reality television stars and footballers’ wives, played out through the
pages of the celebrity weeklies, could be coming to an end.

Magazines including Bauer’s Heat and Closer, formerly owned by Emap, and
IPC’s Now are among those predicted to suffer in the half-yearly ABC
magazine circulation figures, set to be released at midday today.

Circulation at these key weeklies is expected to be down by as much as 10 per
cent year-on-year and about 5 per cent since the last ABC figures were
released in June 2007.

Industry sources said that, in contrast with this time a year ago when Big
Brother contestants grabbed the headlines and the Beckhams were still living
in Britain, no popular reality television stars had emerged in the past year.

From July to December 2006, Heat achieved record circulation figures of
598,623. This number fell to 558,365 in the six months to June 2007 and is
expected to be closer to 530,000 in today’s announcement. Closer,
which also achieved record circulation numbers a year ago of 614,000, dipped
to 570,000 in June 2007 and could fall to around the 550,000 mark this time.
IPC’s Now is expected to show a similar drop, down about 10 per cent
year-on-year and about 4 per cent since last June. National Magazine
Company’s Reveal is expected to be down between 5 and 10 per cent on
the period and year-on-year.

Industry sources put the expected fall at the Bauer-owned titles down in part
to a decrease in marketing spending by Emap, their former owner. Bauer has
been investing in the digital radio station Heat radio, Closer Radio, which
will air on Channel 4’s new digital multiplex, and online offerings such as
Heatworld.co.uk and Closer Diets. The increased investment elsewhere has
given the group less money to spend on interviews with celebrities such as
Jordan and Peter Andre and Kerry Katona.

Richard Desmond’s magazines, which include OK!, New and Star, are
expected to buck the trend with a significant rise in circulation. Rivals
pointed out that Mr Desmond’s publications regularly outbid them for
exclusive celebrity interviews.

One women’s weekly that is expected to announce a strong performance today is
Bauer’s Grazia. The weekly fashion glossy is expected to announce an
increase of about 3 per cent since the last half-yearly figures, to about
230,000. While Grazia features celebrities, its emphasis on high-end fashion
means that it focuses more on Hollywood stars and catwalk models. While Grazia’s
circulation is growing steadily, it targets a niche market and Bauer
recognises that it is unlikely to have the same mass appeal as the celebrity
weeklies.

The men’s magazine market, which has suffered more than most from migration to
the internet, is expected to continue its decline in today’s ABC figures.
Although Bauer’s FHM is likely to be down about 15 per cent
year-on-year, sources expected it to be up slightly since the last ABC
figures in June. Nuts, from IPC, is expected to be down about 7 per cent on
the year and Bauer’s Zoo is predicted to be down about 10 per cent on
the year.

Other men’s titles, such as the upmarket magazine GQ, are expected to
fare better, according to sources. (more)
Phil Redmond: Man of the people
From The Independent. Posted February 9 2008, 12.00am
With his mane of grey hair and non-matching bushy eyebrows, Phil Redmond resembles an ageing blues musician rather than a TV mogul and cultural commissar. There is nothing grand or seigneurial about him. His accent is an unreconstructed Scouse rasp. He can switch in short order from truculence to a slightly sinister friendliness that can beguile the unwary. He is unfailingly blunt in his views of the TV industry that alternately courts him and buggers him about. He was not put on this earth to be a diplomat, or a pillar of the establishment, but to get things done – to dramatise, to stir things up. (more)
