Daily Record to launch 5pm commuter edition?
From Press Gazette. Posted July 24 2006, 11.23am
Speculation is mounting that the Scottish Daily Record could be set to launch a 5pm edition across Scotland¹s central belt - aimed at commuters. It is believed to be one of a number of ideas being considered by the Trinity Mirror-owned tabloid in its bruising circulation battle with the Scottish Sun. The Scottish Sun was only 1210 copies behind the daily market leader Record on Scottish sales in the June ABC figures. The Record sold 394,547 against the Scottish Sun¹s 393,337. With the Scottish Sun selling at 10p and the Record countering by offering a 15p discount voucher on the following day¹s paper, industry insiders believe the Murdoch-owned tabloid will overtake its red-top rival over the summer months. According the Sunday Herald, the new evening edition ³is expected to focus on sports stories, tasters of the next day¹s news and extra details of new stories carried in the earlier editions of the Daily Record.² However, Mark Hollinshead, managing director of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd, has declined to confirm any definite plans, and told the Sunday Herald: ³We are constantly evaluating new publishing opportunities, but we never comment on market rumour and speculation.² It is known that Murray Foote, deputy editor of the Daily Record, and former Scottish Mirror editor Jonathan Russell have been working on a special editorial project for several weeks. According to the Sunday Herald, Foote will edit the new evening edition with Russell, who was also previously editor of Trinity Mirror¹s Paisley Daily Express, as his deputy. Industry sources say that the Daily Record has recruited a team of around a dozen experienced journalists for the evening edition which could be a free title. The edition could be run along the same lines as the London Evening Standard Lite which was launched by Associated Newspapers last year to shore up declining sales. If the new evening edition goes ahead, it would compete with the Newsquest-owned Glasgow Evening Times and Johnston Press¹s Edinburgh Evening News. It would also be seen as opposition to the Daily Mail-owned Metro. The Daily Record evening edition is believed to be only one of a number of projects being looked at by Trinity Mirror in Scotland - anxious to stem the Daily Record¹s falling circulation and decreasing advertising revenues.
