Israel's Maariv 'on verge of closure'

One of Israel's leading newspapers, Maariv, is on the verge of closing, reports the New York Times. It is said to have lost its fierce contest with the country's largest seller, Yediot Aharonot. Another title, Haaretz - regarded as the flagship broadsheet of Israel's left-wing intelligentsia - is also under threat of closure. Last Thursday, it wasn't published for the first time in three decades after editorial staff held a one-day strike to protest at cutbacks.
