Crazy Atmospherics

posted last Tuesday at 11:33

I’m not into the whole DXing scene, but this morning most of the local FM and DAB stations were unlistenable.

Having flicked around, the only stations listenable in Retford (North Nottinghamshire) were LBC 97.3, Kiss on 106.4, 3FM on 96.2 (No Capital) and the Oxford(!) DAB multiplex.

That’s pretty extreme right?

Oak FM Hinckley got completely wiped out at 1pm, possibly by either Glide FM or Trax FM Bassetlaw. Kiss East Anglia coming in often too.

Good lift this morning.

91.8 FM – Radio 1 Holland listened on and off from South Bucks to Winchester.
Also Bucks DAB mux (MKFM – it beats Heart).
Was picking up, various out of area muxes from Wales and the Midlands.

Looking forward to the drive home….. you have been warned.

Oak FM on 107 was coming in loud and clearish (without RDS) here earlier. All disappeared now, but never known it so bad.

I also picked up:
91.8FM – Radio 1 Holland
88.0MHz – Radio 2 Holland
92.2MHz – Omrop Fryslan Holland
All roughly between 3:30 – 4:00am
All on a Tecsun PL-310 (Which are very good analogue radios in terms of selectivity and sensitivity for their size). The only thing that’s missing on it is RDS.
If anyone does want to see if any Tropospheric DX is happening a good site to look at is VHF Propagation Map . It’ll give you a rough Idea if anything is happening.

On Monday, using the standard DAB radio in my Fiesta, I picked up the DR DAB2 Multiplex from Denmark in fully listenable quality with a number of stations, also picked up Radio Bremen but not for more than a few seconds!

That’s on a completely standard, factory fresh car in Sunderland, North east England.

It’s been quite interesting lately. There’s some prediction maps at http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo_eur.html#hour6

Sadly my proper radio got nicked lately but my car radio has been struggling on FM!
