Giving Nuneaton a Community radio station

Ian Muggleton posted on Friday 17th May at 22:44

Nuneaton the town i’m from and like many areas we haven’t got a Community radio station for Nuneaton. Yes we have Anker radio 1386am for the George Elliot hospital and theres Oak FM in Coalville that broadcasts to Nuneaton but also to parts of the Leicestershire area aswell there a commercial led station but some ppl who i’ve spoken to from Nuneaton have said why hasn’t Nuneaton got a Community station as Nuneaton is a viberant and busy town and would benifit from having it’s own Community radio station at one time we had one bk in the earlie 90s but thats now since gone from Nuneaton so i thought about it and if i had a handful of ppl from Nuneaton or surrounding area to come and help yes i’d try hard to give Nuneaton a small Community radio station but one thing i do realise is trying to do it all by myself would be a huge nightmare. So if anyone cares to read this that are based around Nuneaton or surrounding areas to Nuneaton Warwickshire that would like to get on board and help apply for & set up a Community station get in contact with me soon hope to hear from anyone from Warwicshire or the Nubeaton area

Kirkie Thompson is trying to achieve this, but Nuneaton falls foul of the ofcom rules regarding competition & population. There is also the matter of cost of set up. The best placed people would be those that run Anker, but again that would compromise their hospital position. That said, Hermitage is linked to Carolan, their local hospital service (also on 1386).

Agree though, 100,000 people around the Nuneaton & Bedworth. Nothing local.

Ashford (Kent)‘s HR is the CR provider in the town. I suspect like Nuneaton, they’re not allowed to take advertising as their TSA is identical to the local station KMFM which has a local Ashford commercial licence.

Speak to Jon Sketchley at Hermitage (Coalville). Look at their business model to see how to fund the station (a succesful road show and cafe).

Advertising rules make it difficult for community stations to use this avenue of funding, if in direct competition with a station sharing the same TSA (even if not local) you will most likely be unallowed to use advertising as a means of income. Where you are the most you will be allowed is 50% of the station income.

Rather than compete against someone like minded, get together and pool ideas and resources, get in touch with Julian and his contacts.

Best of Luck, it’s a long road.

Thanks Tony for getting i wouldn’t look at competeing against and making through advertising i’d not do to mk income. For the station to stay afloat i’d plan to do fundraising events to raise funds to keep it going for the Community. But thats what i am hoping to do is get a small team together to draft up plans for a Community station i gave heard plenty of folk in Nuneaton say wouldn’t it be nice if we had a local Community station to give us a voice.

Sorry about the slight spelling mistakes it the phone it is a small touch screne but rather large hands so if you do spot a few spelling mistakes it’s because of the phone touch screne lettering being small.

If you can raise enough cash and get a slot on DAB and a digital sound programming licence you wont have that problem.

Peter hello yes i couldn“t agree more it dose fall foul to Ofcom rules wich is a shame for a town such as Nuneaton. And then like you said theres the costs behind the hole set up i thought about Anker radio but as you made a gd point i don’t want to compromise their status as Nuneaton area hospital broadcasting service

As a former Volunteer Studio Manager with our local Community Radio Station and with a vast experience in broadcasting I felt there was no Presentation Training at the on air Station so Along with others we set up Radio Preston On Line Community Radio station we are all Volunteers and our station is not for profit it was not easy but now the comments we get make it all worth wile I am a Retired Man and I get much pleasure passing on my knowledge to others, in Preston I have helped to earn in excess of 200K for local Charities in my former career as a DJ.

Doing a google search shows Nuneaton Camp Hill’s 3 Hills Radio run by Kirk Thompson has been getting grants to set up a training studio , http://www.threehillscommunications.co.uk/Three_Hills_Communications_-_Sh.html
He might be getting to also apply for an FM community licence when they are advertised by Ofcom this year for the Midlands, so might be worth contacting him?

Also the hospital radio station mentioned in Kent, above, http://www.ahbs.org.uk/ now has an FM community licence but also keeps it’s hospital radio status? Perhaps you can get the local HR and 3 hills radio to work together for an FM licence?

Getting a friends of community radio who do funraising or give monthly might be another way of getting income if ads are not allowed?
