Q The 80s needs a new home

posted on Tuesday 7th May at 16:57

Q The 80s was my baby. I did it for two and a half years to the tune of 138 shows (and three specials) and am distraught to see it go. It was the best, most enjoyable and easily the most creatively stimulating radio I’ve made in a 20 year career.

I have no comment about Bauer’s decision to close Q Radio; what I do want is a new outlet for Q The 80s. I’m not specifically touting the show on here but I am looking for suggestions as to stations or production companies I can approach – the size of such doesn’t matter. All I would want is the blank sheet of paper that Q generously afforded me and for the station in question to stream online and therefore be accessible to everybody.

I have made some enquiries and cast a few lines to see what happens but if you can help, either with suggestions (or even offers!) then I’d be very grateful.

The #qthe80s hashtag worked hard each Sunday night. It’d be nice to get it back. A certain futurologist seemed to like the show… and even for a while earned it a Spotify audience.

Thanks for reading this.

Hi Matthew,

I’ve just had a look at your post, I’m not sure but I might be able to help!

I present an 80s show on Halton Community Radio 92.3 FM in Halton, Runcorn (funnily enough I’ve been doing it for 2 and a half years now too!). I play mainstream and obscure 80s songs, mainly pop, rock and soul (largely pop), on my show (in fact, the show is focused more on obscure songs than well-known ones). From Googling, I noticed that you played obscure and also the same/similar tracks to what I play, on your Q the 80s show.

As well as playing the music, I also give facts about the songs and artists each week on my show.

That said, I’m not sure if my show is what you are looking for, as the 2 and a half years I’ve spent doing it is the only experience I’ve had in radio so I’m still more or less a beginner, and the station that I am at is far away from Hull so it could be a bit difficult in terms of meeting up etc. (I saw on Facebook that you live in Hull)

However, my station DOES stream on the Internet so there would not be a problem in that regard if I or whoever were to present the show.

Hope all this is of some use and I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Nathan Gould.

Hi Nathan

Thank you for this. I do not wish at all for someone to sacrifice their show though, far from it! Sounds like you’re doing a fine job. Naturally, what I seek is a radio station that knows what Q The 80s tried to do and achieve, and has room on its schedule to pick up from where Q Radio generously left off.

Stick at it fella, and thanks again.

Hi Matthew,

That’s ok, just thought I’d give my input, thanks for your comment about me doing a good job!

Best of luck with finding a suitable station, will listen in if you get the show back on air, hopefully it’ll just be a matter of time

Thanks,
Nathan

Influential people (ie, the audience of the ex-Q Radio) have been making their feelings known. As a result, rather thrillingly, we have a new start time of 7pm…
