Had a good listen to Steve Wright yesterday for the first time in ages. I’m in two minds. He is the definition of consistent, and you can see why it’s popular with easily digestible content and plenty of fun.

BUT...

It’s 2011. Is a bit of trivia about the length of a lizzards tongue, or the depth of the foundations of Canary Wharf the best in infotainment that we can be served?

As I say – I’m in two minds. It just seems like there are lots of ideas all in the one show. But perhaps that’s BROADcasting as it should be.

Thoughts?

(Ps – favourite Steve Wright link?? “Hold on – the big top of hour news ident sequence is next”)

Thanks for posting, Danny.

I keep meaning to post a copy of some code I discovered which automatically retunes you away from BBC Radio 2 if you are listening at 3.00pm – on to the far more civilised 6Music.

To me, he’s radio from another era. I don’t understand the relevance of playing a twenty-second jingle of custom music (apart from his PRS cheque); I don’t see how telling the time in Europe is of any relevance; he drives me bloody spare.

There are those that say “Well, he’s got the audience”. I’d challenge that – I think anything would get the audience on Radio 2 on an afternoon. Most of the listeners probably can’t get up to switch him off.

I like Steve – oh sure he’s old and fat now, but you know what you’re gunna get when you tune in!

I periodically dip into his programme. I can’t say I am a fan now, though I certainly was when he was on Radio 1. I sometimes think he tries too hard and crams too much into the show. Also I know others have taken issue with the sound quality of his show which, I might add, was particularly poor today for some reason, or maybe its the DAB radio I have. He has got a bit like Marmite, you love him, or you hate him, and no I don’t quite hate him though as I say, he can be hard listening sometimes.

I can’t listen to The Big Show, and don’t really know where to start explaining why.

Well OK, there’s the zoo approach to handling guests which makes interviews so bitty, there’s the plethora of voices, the gratuitous use of music that’s nothing to do with Radio 2s sound, the hellish inanity and the fact that everyone who gets in touch seems to “Love the show, Steve.”

It’s so much better when Chris Tarrant fills in for him. Actually, it’s better when anyone deps.

Loving the show, Steve! Well, no actually. Steve Wright has been doing exactly the same show since I was at school (I’m 46 now). If people love it, fine. But I’m bored. Is there no more to him?

While there’s a lot to be said for consistency, the thing with radio long-term is that you need to keep refreshing yourself every so often – keeping the core stuff that still works well but making sure your style remains up-to-date.

R2 continues to get good figures for that slot but how much of that is because it’s R2 and how much because it’s Steve Wright?

He’s also lucky. I’ve encountered presenters who also seem to live in a time-warp and, as a result, wonder why they’re no longer getting work – and end up posting vitriolic comments on DS and elsewhere.

I used to think that Steve wright was old-fashioned and ego-centric.
That was until he came and spoke to a CR group with which I was involved.
He is a consummate perfectionist professional.
The reson why he sounds cheesey and sometimes lightweight and inconsequential is because that’s what his listeners actually tell him that they like.
It’s called “Find a gap and fill it”!

Steve Wright? Then you’ll hate this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AblV0SayESw.

If only he could innovate like he did back in the day. It all sounds so tired now. The great thing about the Radio 1 show was that it evolved. The Radio 2 show hasn’t. Something like Ask Elvis would have had a limited shelf life.

I realise you can’t be cutting edge at Radio 2, but it’s all in desperate need of the kind of freshening up the Radio 1 show was never frightened of doing.

That’s a rather cruel assessment – just look at his photo on the BBC website… http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wr4r
