Trouble With Balding

Art Grainger posted on Thursday 27th June at 17:51

No, I’m not trying to sell any kind of miracle cure …. but I do want to to talk about Balding and how I feel this is now becoming a bit of a pain in my opinion.

So there I was, shuffling paper all day in my daytime job. I had the radio on, tuned to a speech station, for which throughout the day I was enjoying one great program after another and another …. until it happened.

I was just about to settle into another program, this time about a subject that I have a little more than a passive interest in ….. then they announced who the presenter was.

At that moment I reached for the off button.

I don’t dislike the woman at all and I can appreciate that she seems to be the UK’s media darling of the moment but frankly, it seems to be going a little too far that she is being used as as often as she is right now, from being a talking head, to being a sofa guest on a TV talk and consumer affairs show, even being an expert on sport. But does she have to be on just about every kind of program on a TV or radio schedule?

Ideally, presenters should be on programs that are best suited for their talents but it seems as though Clair is becoming a token presenter for a lot of other programs, which is why I feel as though I am suffering from Balding exhaustion.

I am struggling to think of any other presenter that has had similar “exploitation.”

There is such a thing as over exposure. I too have nothing against Ms Bawlding at all. In fact she was really god on Channel 4’s coverage of Royal Ascot. But she does seem to have infultrated everywhere. What with her hosting the Athletics from Birmingham on Saturday to doing her Sunday radio 2 show, plus, Ramblings on radio 4, she even popped up on the news Quiz the other week. It’s great for her, all the money rolling in, but audiences can easily get tired of the same faces day in day out.

But really, the set of people who listen to Ramblings and her Radio 2 Sunday Show as well as watching athletics and Ascot is probably quite small. I haven’t seen or heard any of those!

Clare Balding is a talented and versatile presenter, and I say good luck to her.

Clare’s probably one of the few presenters in the industry who doesn’t grate on me, can present a wide range of programmes with the required gravitas and is popular with all demographics.

The same can’t be said for other presenters who are as exposed.
