Is there much money in making software today

posted on Saturday 20th April at 20:05

This is more of a general topic which effects most industries including radio. An article that I have come accross on open source software says that it is now getting a fair amount of market share: Open source is taking over the world, survey says . Do you think that the days of making large amounts of money in software is over? is there more money in making hardware?

The money might not be in making bespoke software anymore.
But in paying people to work on existing open source projects.

For example the Hosting provider Dreamhost have someone on staff purely to work on WordPress bugs.

So really the market is changing from creating more/bespoke software to supporting projects, and bespoke extensions/modifications for specific needs.

So no, the days of making large amounts of money in software isn’t over.
