Mic Processor

posted on Wednesday 8th May at 18:24

I am looking for a Vocal Mic Processor for V/O/Podcast and V/T ing!

I have an Audio Technica Mic that requires 48 volts so may need one that supplies it…anyone point me in the right direction for second hand stuff, analogue or digital?

Depends on budget really. I picked up a nice one on Ebay for £40. Do you really need one, or could you add it in post-production in Audition?

Alternatively, consider a Behringer Shark – for around £60 you get compressor, gate, phantom power and a few other features not required for VO work (feedback supression etc).

Of course there are loads of higher end units out there if you have the budget.

Gary, you WILL need a unit that supplies ‘phantom’ power (48v) to your microphone, otherwise it won’t work. Having said that, most pre-amps and processors have this facility.

You haven’t indicated a budget, so I suggest that you start at the less-expensive end of the market by taking a look at the mic pre amps made by Behringer. They offer very good value for money at full retail, but by shopping around you can save a few quid: many of their products appear on eBay.

As Glyn rightly points out, there are many other units available from different manufacturers at much higher prices, but by starting off with a lower priced item, you can always upgrade as and when funds and experience allow.

Keep an eye out for a Behringer VX2000 or VX2496 on eBay. Will do exactly what you want for around £40-50 secondhand.

I’ve seen a few stations put these in recently. http://wheatstone-processing.com/index.php/m-2-dual-digital-mic-processor-overview

Meanwhile, I have just listed a Behringer MIC800 on eBay.

I’ve owned just about every mic processor under £300 that you can get your hands on. The happiest I’ve been is the one I have at the moment, and that’s a DBX 286A. Phantom Power, Gate, Compression, EQ and I got mine for £40 on ebay. It’s simply the best £40 I’ve spent.

It’d take £1000 worth of TC Electronic to make me happier.
