Using TBU with IP phones

Matt Wade posted on Monday 13th May at 11:40At the Hospital Radio station I am involved in is moving to IP phones using a Nortel CS1K system and so am looking to ideas as to how we can interface our existing AEQ TBU units to their system. Any ideas of a converter box we can plug in to the network point to convert it back to analogue?

I believe these only work if you are being presented with an analogue line but just via a RJ45 and we have these in place at the moment however they are moving to not be supplying us with analogue line anymore.

You could try this

I know it will work via a router as I have one plugged into a port on my router at home and an analogue phone plugged into it. I use it as a second phone line into the home – works a treat. But I am not sure if it will plug straight into a VoIP based phone system. It needs power BTW. For £50 or so it maybe worth a punt.

You’ll need a SIP adaptor – you can get some fairly cheaply, but you’ll need to ensure it is compatible with the PBX system.
Another possible solution would be to use a soft phone on a computer, not needing a TBU at all – but I’d guess that would be a world of pain with the hospital’s IT guys who’ll probably not want their network touching your IT in any way shape or form.
Then there is audio tx SIP-TBU product which is an extremely nice bit of kit, even though Mo can offer a charity discount, if you ask nicely, it still comes in at a hefty price point compared to your average Hospital Radio budget.

You can use MOD-TAP boxes. These allow you to route analogue lines over ethernet cables.
