Head of News, Sports & Current Affairs

We’re looking to appoint a new Head of News, Sports & Current Affairs. This position ensures that the station is meeting its set commitments in terms of news output. The role also includes ensuring that travel and entertainment news are broadcast at the set times. This role is voluntary.

Main Responsibilities:

Working with the Programme Controller and Station Manager Managing the news team, recruiting and training new members and ensuring an effective rota is in place Ensuring that entertainment and travel news are staffed and broadcast at the appropriate times Striving the make the news output consistent even over difficult periods, such as university holidays Taking steps to involve the community as active members of the team Populating the news section of the ‘www.sparksunderland.com/news‘ website with regular content targeted to our audience Monitoring the content of the news bulletins, ensuring that many of the stories are local whilst striving to gather our own original interview content. Being willing to embrace the opportunity to work with Spark TV to produce multi platform content To lase with the production team to create exciting, attention grabbing news beds and sound effects Attending the weekly management meeting

Essential Knowledge and Skills:.

The ability to write scripts in a way which stylistically appeals to our target audience Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage a team A good sense of what is newsworthy and a great understanding of our target audience A knowledge of how to operate a studio desk and how to use Burli and Adobe Audition. It would also be useful, but not essential for the candidate to have a knowledge of how to use Selector/Linker Determination, tenacity and a good work ethic
