Muxco wins North Yorks DAB

The Local Radio Company, together with MuxCo have won the digital multiplex licence for North Yorkshire. The award means TLRC will be able to take three of their stations, Minster FM, Stray FM and Yorkshire Coast Radio, onto the digital platform for the first time. (more)

Format change for Stray FM

97.2 Stray FM has gained approval to reduce the amount of specialist music output required from 14 hours per week to nine. The TLRC station has an unusual amount of specialist shows for a station of its size, and Ofcom said the change of Format would not significantly alter the character of the service. (more)

Mel Booth to join TLRC

The Local Radio Company has hired Mel Booth as its regional managing director for stations in Yorkshire and the North East - in a move to strengthen its operational management. Mel joins from UTV-owned Wave FM in Blackpool, where he is currently Managing Director. Prior to this, he worked as Managing Director for Emap-owned Viking Radio in Hull and Metro Radio in Newcastle. His responsibilities will include Minster FM in York, Yorkshire Coast Radio, Stray FM in Harrogate, Home FM in Huddersfield, Sun in Sunderland, Durham, and Alpha in Darlington. He will report to TLRC’s newly appointed Managing Director – Radio, Sally Oldham. (more)

Ofcom explains Rotherham award

It was a battle between three companies, all of which operate a network of local radio stations in the North of England. UTV proposed Rotherham Radio, with support from neighbouring Peak FM in Chesterfield and The Pulse in Bradford. TLRC have Stray FM in Harrogate and Minster FM in York and applied for the Rotherham licence as Renaissance FM, and the application from the Lincs FM Group had the backing of Dearne FM in Barnsley and Trax FM next door in Doncaster. In the end it was the support of Lincs FM Group stations which helped Rother FM win the licence for Rotherham, as Ofcom have explained today. No more than 12 hours a week of network programming will be broadcast, and Ofcom explained that the locally based group will bring considerable experience of operating successful smaller stations in similar-sized markets adjacent to Rotherham. They also recognised the realism of the group’s financial projections, the radio experience of its board and the clear recognition that the Rotherham licence would present a different challenge to other nearby markets.
