UK radio to go completely digital by 2020
From Biz Asia. Posted June 24 2008, 3.18pm
UK radio services should be migrated on to digital audio broadcasting (DAB) by 2020, according to the Digital Radio Working Group's (DRWG) interim report. The government-backed industry panel recommended the establishment of a timetable for the migration of all UK radio from analogue to digital and said that this should be completed between 2015 and 2020. However, in the medium term, the group recommends migrating all national, regional and large local stations to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), with FM continuing to be used by small local and community radio stations. The DRWG does not recommend setting a date for the switchover to digital radio now. Instead, it recommends a timetable for migration is set out, which is dependent on progress against the agreed criteria. The group's initial assessment is that migration could be completed by 2020. Chairman of the DRWG Barry Cox said: "At the end of May this year, sales of DAB sets exceeded seven million. We believe radio must have a digital future and that this will benefit both listeners and industry. Audiences will be able to enjoy increased functionality and more choice of channels, while the industry will no longer have to sustain the increased transmission costs of broadcasting on multiple platforms. "If these benefits are to be achieved, then action must be taken to address the significant challenges which threaten the future growth of the market. There is a great deal to be done to address these issues, and I hope that this interim report will stimulate debate on how to achieve a digital future." The group, set up in November 2007, has been looking at the barriers to the growth of digital radio and the conditions needed to allow digital platforms to become the main means of delivering radio. As part of its work, four sub-groups were set up to consider issues such as the mechanisms for growth, technology, coverage and European harmonisation. Could Sunrise Radio national get delayed?
From Biz Asia. Posted March 7 2008, 10.36pm
According to reports this week, Channel 4 executives are effectively split over the broadcaster's digital radio venture. 4 Digital Group consortium led by Channel 4 was awarded the second national DAB multiplex licence. The consortium had proposed to provide ten linear national services including that of Sunrise Radio. However, MediaGuardian has said that a leading executive at the group was split, with chief executive, Andy Duncan and director of new business and corporate development, Nathalie Schwarz, who are advocates of the project, looking increasingly isolated. The programme commissioning team believe the radio venture will drain Channel 4 of up to £100m, which is needed to bolster its programme budget at a tough point when the channel is about to launch its campaign for public assistance. Senior channel executives accordingly held a meeting last week to consider options and the board, chaired by Luke Johnson, is to take a hard look at the policy decision to invest in digital radio at its April meeting. It looks increasingly unlikely that the new national multiplex consisting of channels like Sunrise Radio is launching this year. In other DAB digital radio news, Financial Times has reported the possibility of BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4 and Five Live gradually switching to DAB only, albeit over a long time period. Asian radio industry gives DAB backing
From Biz Asia. Posted February 12 2008, 10.25pm
DAB radio IS the future, say key players in the UK Asian radio sector. The industry is already split over DAB. Is it the cornerstone of the future of digital radio, or is it a hugely expensive white elephant that has already been overtaken by rival delivery platforms such as the web? Earlier this week, GCap Media announced it is to pull back from digital radio to help double profits as part of an overhaul which will see digital radio brands such as theJazz and Planet Rock close down (it has already closed down Core, Life and Disney). BizAsia.co.uk has spoken to the key figures of Asian radio industry who all unanimously supported DAB. Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Audio & Music "The BBC has been at the forefront of digital radio for more than ten years and remains fully committed to DAB and the other digital delivery platforms. There's an exciting future for radio. It is central to the lives of huge numbers of people who listen every week. "Recent RAJAR listening figures show that nearly 5.6 million people tune into BBC Radio via DAB each week and the BBC's digital-only networks continue to grow, with two networks – 6 Music and BBC 7 – recently posting record listening figures." Raj Baddhan, Station Manager, ZEE Radio “As a new player in the UK Asian DAB market, we are positive our carefully sifted programming will attract new listeners to digital radio. Programming, packaging and the marketing of the station are factors that can determine the popularity of one station; we aim to deliver on all three. Watch this space." John Ogden, Director, Club Asia "This is a very difficult time for Commercial stations who have been heavily exposed in DAB. Many groups pursued a "land grab" when DAB was launched. They are now realising that the costs of maintaining present simulcast services are largely unsustainable. "However, Commercial Radio is questioning the viability of DAB just as interest among retailers, manufacturers and listeners has never been higher. 23% of homes have DAB digital radio and 30% of homes are listening to radio on a digital platform. However, those listeners clearly demand more than a simulcast of what's already available on their old AM or FM frequencies. We remain excited about our role in the new Channel 4 led multiplex. It is clear to us at Club Asia that DAB has a role in a fast converging UK media industry. DAB is part of a bouquet of opportunities offered to listeners in the future. Listening via the internet and mobile technology will complete the picture. The key is providing new and exciting services that listeners can't get elsewhere" Surjit Singh Ghuman, Director, Asian FX and Panjab Radio "Panjab Radio has proved itself as a leading brand on digital radio with its niche programming. Once again we’re doing the same with Asian FX by offering an entity, which is individual but also something, which listeners have shown interest in. I’m hoping we can turn around the negative press DAB has been receiving of late by shaking up the market with our Asian FX, just like we did with Panjab Radio." Sunrise Radio, which is launching nationally on DAB early next-year refused to provide us with a quote on their plans. Two new radio stations launch on Midlands DAB
From Biz Asia. Posted October 26 2007, 8.23pm
The West Midlands today have two new Asian radio stations on DAB, both of which are from the same umbrella group - Panjab Radio. It signed a contract with MXR digital to be a service provider on their West Midlands multiplex earlier this year. The successful religious and entertainment station Panjab Radio has been available in London digitally for the past seven years. It can also be picked up on DAB in West Yorkshire. This is the first time Panjab Radio has branched into the Midlands to tap into the highly populated Panjabi market. Not snubbing its non-Panjabi audiences, Panjab Radio has also launched a new general Asian entertainment station steering towards the youth tentatively called Q Asia (previously known as Urban Asia). The station officially begins broadcasting (with presenters) at the start of 2008, until then it hopes to generate enough noise around the new addition as a direct commercial competitor to Radio XL, Sunrise Radio and its Punjabi Radio. Q Asia will be announcing its official name and programme line-up in the coming days, keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for the exclusive news break. Previously, Surjit Singh Ghuman Managing Director of Panjab Radio said, "My four years of hard work and determination to get on to West Midlands on DAB has finally paid off and feels like a dream coming true, but in reality the very hard task of getting the message to the Panjabi community will start now and our listeners will be over the moon as they will not be confined to a TV and instead listen to us on DAB digital radio anywhere in the home, work or whilst on the move." Diane Wray, Managing Director MXR Digital said, "I am really delighted that Panjab Radio are joining the rosta of stations broadcast by MXR in the West Midlands and look forward to working with the team to promote DAB in the area." Panjab Radio is replacing the slot left vacant by Jazzfm, with its 128kbps capacity being split into two 64kbps - one for Panjab Radio and the other for Q Asia. RAJAR Results: Digital platform proving a big hit
From Biz Asia. Posted August 16 2007, 8.30am
For the first time since the introduction of the newly launched methodology (in January 2007), digital platforms (DAB, Digital TV, Internet) listening figures have been accounted for. The RAJAR results for the second quarter of this year reveals 12.8% of listening is now via a digital platform with digital listening hours totaling 136 million hours per week. Overall listening to digital only services is growing quickly, from 905,000 listeners in Q2, 2003 to 6.09 million in Q2, 2007 and during an average week 26.2% of the population (adults 15+) now listen to radio via a digital platform. This is encouraging news for digital-only radio stations like Panjab Radio, Islam Radio, Punjabi Radio, Asian Sound, Masti Radio and Yarr Radio, as they all broadcast on DAB in their respective regions. Panjab Radio was one of the first non-terrestrial Asian radio stations to broadcast on DAB. It launched at a time when DAB was a relatively unknown phenomenon and when public awareness in the Asian community of its benefits were low. Surjit Ghuman, Station Director of Panjab Radio welcomed today's news. "Panjab Radio sees DAB as the future of Radio and has invested heavily in this platform laying down a solid infrastructure and will continue doing so in the future, which will allow it to be at the forefront of broadcasting. Through its own in-house marketing campaign Panjab Radio has raised DAB’s profile significantly amongst the Asian community and sold thousands of DAB sets directly to its listeners." More to follow. Club Asia DJ to defect to BBC Asian Network?
From Biz Asia. Posted June 11 2007, 11.54pm
A few months ago, it was reported on BizAsia.co.uk that a presenter on London's Club Asia was to defect to BBC Asian Network, following in the footsteps of Noreen Khan. Speculation is rife that Club Asia's Breakfast show presenter Jas "The Man" will be leaving to join the BBC Asian Network as producer for a show, which is yet to be confirmed. Even though a show is also likely to be given to Jas, details remain sketchy on what his exact involvement at the Asian Network will be. According to industry rumours, Jas "The Man" will be leaving Club Asia at the end of this month. Noreen Khan left Club Asia earlier this year to join the national BBC station. Her chart show begins this Saturday at midday. Previously K-Jal defected to Sunrise Radio. Keep it with BizAsia.co.uk for the utmost latest. King Khan confirmed for Asian Lifestyle Show
From Biz Asia. Posted May 14 2007, 10.39am
Sunrise Radio has signed up Bollywood's King Khan - Shah Rukh Khan - for this year's London Asian Lifestyle Show. The news was confirmed by Breakfast presenter Tony Patti this morning on Sunrise Radio. The station has been on a high recently after continuing its successive run as the UK's most popular Asian radio station in RAJAR figures, which were announced last week. A statement from Sunrise Radio said the following: "Tony Lit & Vijay Saggar are pleased to announce the Attendance of Bollywood's number one Super star Shah Rukh Khan at the reliance India Call Asian Lifestyle Show At London Olympia. "On running a survey at last years show 94% said that the star they would like to most see and meet is Shah Rukh khan, so as organisers we went all out to sign up the Iconic SRK for the show. "SRK will be Signing autographs and pictures with fans at the Western Union Autograph arena, appearing on the Shaadi.com Fashion Catwalk and also appearing on the Bollywood connect entertainment stage interacting with Sunrise radio Djs and his fans. "SRK will be appearing on the 7th and 8th July." It was evident Sunrise Radio was to sign a huge star for its London show after a lukewarm response for the Birmingham Asian Lifestyle Show, which took place in March. Bollywood star Lara Dutta pulled out of her appearance 24 hours before the event was to begin due to reasons unknown. Shah Rukh Khan is undoubtedly the Asian Lifestyle Show's biggest signing in its four-year history. The event takes place at London Olympia on 6th, 7th and 8th July. Cricketer Monty Panesar has also confirmed his attendance for the Asian Lifestyle Show. Updated 12:30pm (more)

Scooped: Radio station websites lack updates
From Biz Asia. Posted April 1 2007, 11.24pm
This week BizAsia.co.uk's sleuths scooped down on the websites of a few Asian radio stations in the UK and were appalled to see how most of them have not been updated in weeks, months, and even, years! These discoveries were correct as of 19:00 on Sunday 01st April 2007: Sunrise Radio: -An hour before the event is about to reach its end, a banner advert on the homepage still invites exhibitors to book their stand for the Asian Lifestyle Show in Birmingham, which it says is "Coming Back"! -No one has reviewed any Bollywood movie ever since the release of the dud 'Zindaggi Rocks', almost eight months back! -The presenters' page does not have any profiles for nearly half a dozen presenters. -The Entertainment section has a solo snippet on Ram Gopal Varma being criticised for trying to remake 'Sholay' - a news item that is more than six months old! -The Celeb Files section features only Hrithik Roshan, who has been there for nearly half a year now. -The news snippets in the Bollywood section vary from being three to six months old! -The Events page is still busy celebrating the Diwali 2006 occasion at the Square in London! Club Asia: -The Playlist C has no tracks! -The Essential 20 Chart features only 19 tracks! What happened to No.20? -The little box on the 'Highest New Entry' features an image of the film 'Dil Apna Punjabi', released last year. -The Urban Session Playlist hasn't been updated since 01/10/2006. Asian Sound Radio: -After more than a year, the website continues to state 'The Asian Sound Radio website is currently being updated'. Radio XL: -The page with the Schedule has been missing for over two years! -The links for Daily Bollywood Top Ten and Bollywood News take you nowhere. Ditto for the links for News & Weather, Asian Love & Message Board. The only sites that seem almost fully updated belong to Sabras Radio and BBC Asian Network. If you've spotted any unusual or strangely funny items on Asian TV, radio or in print, please contact BizAsia.co.uk today and we will publish the best goof ups on the website. (more)
