The opportunity to take-over the local radio licence for Canterbury or Dover and Folkestone is now available. Ofcom is inviting declarations of intent to anyone wishing to apply for the franchise, currently held by CTFM Limited and South East Radio Limited respectively. Both are due to expire in September 2009. (more)

Pre-fade problems at TFM Radio

On the same day the station won European Station of the Year, there were red faces all round at TFM Radio in Teesside. While programme controller Chris Rick was in Barcelona to accept the accolade during the inaugural European Radio Awards, breakfast show presenter Graham Mack was turning the airwaves blue when a live caller mistakenly went to air during a song. More community radio awards

Ofcom has awarded four more community radio groups with a five year licence. The new stations are 3TFM in North Ayrshire, Utopia FM in Sunderland, Community Voice FM in Middlesbrough and Spice FM in Newcastle. (more)
Big City makes a loss

Whilst Emap are celebrating the top two spots in London, based on market share, the Big City network has taken a bit of a dip. Overall figures are down slightly but some individual stations such as Rock FM and TFM Radio lose average hours. Magic, on the other hand show a slight rise in listeners. (more)
TFM Radio & Sun FM Favourites in North East England

The Breakfast Show on TFM Radio with Graham Mack and the Drivetime Show on Sun FM with Pete Clough have been voted the Best in North East England in a poll run by Merry Media.Over the past couple of months, Merry Media has been moving from region to region across the UK to find the best breakfast and drivetime shows on the radio with votes coming from within the radio industry as well as businesses and listeners.Graham Mack came top of the breakfast show poll with his show on TFM Radio with 17% of the votes, second place was held jointly by Tim West on Alpha 103.2 and Tony Horne on Metro Radio with 12% each. Third place in the poll was Peter Grant's Breakfast Show on Durham FM.. (more)
Webby Award for BBC Radio 1

It was an online battle between BBC Radio 1 and Virgin Radio in the radio category of the Webby Awards, but the BBC managed to gain the top spot. CBC Radio 3 in Canada, icatfm in Spain and NPR made up the rest of the nominations. The BBC won three awards in total. (more)
New charity role for Emap

Emap Radio have created a new position to head up charity work for the company's Big City network. Cath Ellington, previously the boss at Stockton-based TFM, has been promoted to the job. She'll be responsible for overseeing the charitable function for the group's 32 local radio stations. (more)
Les Gunn joins TLRC

Former TFM presenter Les Gunn is returning to radio in the Northeast, to host a weekly phone-in show on TLRC stations Durham FM, Alpha FM and Sun FM. ''Gunnys Talk of the North'' starts on January 7th. (more)
Paul Jordan exits Rock FM

Emap has regionalised station management in the North West, after managing director Paul Jordan was sacked from Emap's Rock FM in Preston last week. He will be replaced by Michelle Surrell, who will now manage both Rock FM and Key 103 in Manchester.
Surrell has worked at Emap Radio for almost 20 years, having started with the sales team at TFM. Most recently she has been appointed MD of Key 103 in Manchester as well as overseeing the web and interactive strategies for Emap's stations across the North of England and Scotland. (more)
Eight community licences explained

On Thursday 11th May, Ofcom's Radio Licensing Committee awarded eight community radio licences. These awards are the last in Ofcom's first round of community radio licensing, which began with the receipt of 194 applications in November 2004. From these, Ofcom has now awarded a total of 107 community radio licences.
The eight new stations will be: 7 Waves Radio on the Wirral in Merseyside, Talkin' Toxteth TTFM in Liverpool, Halton FM in Runcorn, Cheshire FM for Mid Cheshire, Diversity FM in Lancaster, Chelmsford Calling in Essex, Saint FM in Burnham-On-Crouch and BRFM which will serve the community on the Isle of Sheppey. GTFM refused government grant

GTFM, one of the first radio stations in the UK to be given an 'access radio' licence and more recently a community radio licence is under threat after an assembly government grant of £80,000 was refused.
Five full time staff currently run the station along with a group of volunteers but it has been reported that the station will close down unless funding can be secured. Most other community radio stations are still to start broadcasting since the awarding of licences since early 2005. (more)
Wales: Closure threat to community radio

The first community radio station to be set up in Wales is under threat after an assembly government grant of £80,000 was refused. GTFM, which was set up in Pontypridd in 2002, was the first radio station in Wales to be supported by the UK Government, with EU backing. It is run by five full-time staff and volunteers but has warned of closure unless funding can be secured. The assembly government (more)
