Radcliffe questions Salford move

Veteran BBC radio presenter Mark Radcliffe has raised concerns about the decision to move BBC Radio 5 Live out of London, and said the move to Media City at Salford Quays near Manchester would radically change the station's character. (more)

Moving cash for radio staff

The BBC is defending plans to offer staff moving to Salford Quays up to £8,000 relocation costs. Various departments, including Radio 5 Live will make the move north in 2011 and the BBC may even buy houses for some employees. (more)

TLRC completes football deal

The Local Radio Company has transferred ownership of The Quay in Portsmouth, Spirit FM in Chichester and Isle of Wight Radio to a new joint venture company. The new company is owned by Portsmouth FC (26 per cent) and TLRC (74 per cent). (more)

Live music at Radio Scotland

The foyer of BBC Scotland's new headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow is to be the venue for a new series of music gigs. Between 10 and 14 September, each of the station's evening music shows will host a live concert in the new, state-of- the-art building which officially opens later this month. (more)

TLRC transfers three stations

The Local Radio Company is transferring ownership of The Quay in Portsmouth, Spirit FM in Chichester and Isle of Wight Radio to a new joint venture company. The new company is owned by Portsmouth FC (26 per cent) and TLRC (74 per cent). The football club will pay TLRC £1m for the stake. (more)

The BBC Trust has agreed details terms with Peel Holdings, the owners of the land in Salford Quays, about the upcoming move. Five Live and other departments will leave London in 2011. It is expected that preliminary work will begin at mediacity:uk in Salford Quays within days. (more)

TLRC extend Pompey coverage

The Local Radio Company are to simulcast their football commentaries of Portsmouth matches on both 107.4 The Quay and Isle of Wight Radio. Portsmouth-based The Quay has been covering Pompey for many years with live broadcasts from home and away games - now TLRC say supporters on the Island will get to hear them too. (more)

BCRfm renamed as QuayWest

Bridgwater’s BCR-fm has changed its name at the start of what’s promised to be a fresh new start for the radio station by owners Laser Broadcasting. The station was renamed as QuayWest 107.4 this morning. The station launched, as BCR, in July 2001, and the man who planned and created the original idea, Dave Englefield, has been part of the on-air team ever since. (more)

Plans submitted for Media City

The BBC move to Salford Quays has taken another step closer today with the land owners Peel Holdings submitting planning applications to Salford council. It is thought work could start on the site, pictured below, within months. About a quarter of the site will be home to the BBC, including national radio staton Five Live. (more)

BBC move to Salford confirmed

After years of talks, the BBC will move to a new Media City in Salford Quays will go ahead, after the Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell announced a licence fee settlement today. The move north should be complete by 2011 which includes moving BBC Radio Five Live. (more)

BBC gets closer to Salford

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has told MPs the BBC should carry out its planned relocation of various departments, including Radio 5 Live, to Salford Quays. Jowell wants to make sure the move will happen regardless of the licence fee settlement, which is due in the new year. (more)

Laser purchases Quaywest and BCR

Laser Broadcasting has today announced that it has reached agreement with Choice Media to purchase Quaywest fm based in West Somerset and BCR fm based in Bridgwater. This is one of a number of purchases agreed by Laser Broadcasting including Classic Hits in Hereford and Worcester and Sunshine in Ludlow. (more)

BBC choose Salford Quays

The preferred site for the BBC's proposed move out of London has been announced as Salford Quays. The BBC Board of Governors has authorised the BBC North Project Team to treat Salford MediaCity:UK as the leading bidder in principle and conduct discussions with them on an exclusive basis with a view to them being confirmed as preferred bidder, provided certain outstanding issues can be resolved within a limited period of exclusivity. BBC Director-General Mark Thompson said: "I'm pleased that we have taken another step forward in our proposals to create a major new centre for network broadcasting in the North of England. We remain very conscious that our proposal must still meet our stringent value for money criteria and be affordable." (more)

Manchester v Salford for the BBC

The 400 million pounds move north of five BBC departments and 1,500 staff is due to start in 2010 with the creation of a media zone in either Manchester or Salford Quays. Salford's plans for Media City UK were revealed earlier this week, whilst images for the Manchester site have been released today. Both locations are within five miles of each other, and both offer the BBC a very attractive package. MediaCity:UK is surrounded by water. At its heart is a triangle of iconic buildings, The Lowry, Imperial War Museum and a new media complex, home to the BBC. MediaZone Manchester propose a model of a modern city centre district, a tooled up barrio for business. There’ll be coffee shops, restaurants, stores, hotels and apartments alongside the studios and technical facilities, the Media Enterprise Centre and the Open Centre. (more)

Simon Hirst to host radio night

Xfm arrives in Manchester

Paul Tonkinson has kicked off his first breakfast show on Manchester's newest radio station, 97.7 Xfm. The first song played was Stone Roses, I Am The Resurrection as chosen by visitors to the station website during test transmissions. Based on the ground floor in Laser House, Salford Quays, Manchester the station is owned by GCap Media who also run Capital Gold 1548, Century FM annd Digital News Network (Northwest) from the same address. Two apply for Newry licence

It's a two horse race for the new Newry local radio licence. Two companies are proposing a new station to serve Newry and Mourne in Northern Ireland. Five FM, backed by River Media (who recently bought Mid 106 FM from CN Group) are proposing a music and information station for all adults in the Newry and Mourne area with a strong commitment to local content. Quay 100 aims to be a local radio station catering for all adults (primarily targeted at the 35+ age group), focussing on local news, issues and information relevant to life today in Newry and Mourne; also featuring the best music from the last four decades, modern country music and specialist programming content. Banbury now In Touch

Banbury's newest radio station 107.6 Touch FM launched today at 10AM from the Castle Quays Shopping Centre. The station went live across much of Oxfordshire and beyond when popstars The ugababes "Pushed the Button" with a special message, as their chart-topping single was played out as the first song.
