Shropshire's 103.1 Beacon Radio is celebrating 20 years of being on air this weekend. The GCap Media owned radio station launched on 14th July 1987, and to commemorate the stations birthday, Beacon will be springing 1 or 2 surprises on listeners all day. (more)
RSL rapped for sponsoring news

A Restricted Service Licence station in North Shropshire has been found in breech of Ofcom rules for sponsoring news bulletins provided by Sky. A listener complained when they heard the news on Whitchurch FM was sponsored by a local business. (more)
Laser win first licence

Laser Broadcasting have won their first analogue radio licence from Ofcom, with their application for Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. The group already have two nearby stations - Classic Hits Hereford and Worcester and Sunshine 855 (Ludlow and South Shropshire). (more)
BBC Shropshire TV's Spiritual Search

BBC Shropshire TV has been on a mission to seek out people and places from around the country, in an effort to gain an insight into the spiritual make-up of the county. A week long series of films goes out between Monday 14th August and Sunday 20th August, examining faith and religion in modern society. The week of programming looks into people and places in Shropshire that have a strong spritual character.. (more)

New boss at Radio Shropshire

Tim Beech has been appointed as the new Managing Editor of BBC Radio Shropshire. He joins the station from BBC Radio Stoke, where he has been Assistant Editor for the past three years.
He started out his broadcasting career in commercial radio before moving to BBC WM in 1989 as a Broadcast Journalist. From there he became Sports Editor at the station, a position he held for eight years. (more)
Shropshire stations confirm name

As previously reported on RadioToday.co.uk last month, Shropshire’s newest radio stations will be called “The Severn”.
The stations will serve Oswestry and Shrewsbury, with each station being run separately on different frequencies, but will share the name of “The Severn”. The stations will be hopefully up and running by late summer.

Ofcom awards Shrewsbury licence

Shrewsbury FM, owned by MNA Broadcasting Limited has won the battle for a new local radio station serving Shrewsbury and Oswestry.
Applications were received from four bidder by the closing date of 7 November 2005, all proposing a local service of music and information. Owners MNA also run other stations nearby including Telford FM and The Wyre. Shrewsbury FM is a working title and the station is expected to re-name for the launch later this year.
The licence is for a service to cover the towns of Shrewsbury and Oswestry, in Shropshire, and the surrounding area, which has an adult population (aged 15+) of between 100,000 and 120,000. However, the exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics. (more)
New boss for BBC Radio Bristol

Tim Pemberton - currently Managing Editor at BBC Radio Shropshire - has been appointed as Managing Editor at BBC Radio Bristol.He will succeed Jenny Lacey on 3 April 2006.
Tim, born in Kings Heath, Birmingham in 1963, attended local schools and in 1983 went to University of Lancaster, earning a BA Honours in Philosophy and Religious Studies.
His career started in Birmingham at an independent production company. (more)
