I started at BBC Radio Nottingham straight from university in 1978, and Arnold Miller was my boss for most of the three years I was there. I thought he was a bit straight at first, in his tweed slacks and big glasses, but he turned out to be straight for all the right reasons – very honest and supportive. (more)

Mohammad joke on BBC local

The BBC has been forced to apologise after a presenter on BBC Radio Nottingham made a comment about naming a dog Mohammed. Mid-morning presenter Frances Finn made the comment during a conversation with a guest on Tuesday. (more)

£7.35m tabled for midlands winners in Connect Midlands Investment Challenge

Nine Midlands companies were last week (October 10) announced as winners in the Connect Midlands £5 Million Investment Challenge. The East Midlands winners were Nottingham-based CellAura Technologies and Pacemaker UK, SAKS Electronics from Derby, SynchroPulse Ltd from Lincoln and Daventry-based Green Energy Options and the West Midlands winners were Coventry-based Opscape and PPL Party, RedWeb Security from Tamworth and Aldridge Piling Equipment from Cannock. Former DJ Chris Tarrant arrested

Former Capital breakfast presenter Chris Tarrant has been arrested and bailed following an incident at an Indian restaurant in Nottingham. He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a fellow diner, a police source said today. (more)

Student headhunted by BBC 6

A twenty-one year old student from Newport has been hired by the BBC to present the 6 Music chart show each Sunday from 2pm. Philippa Treverton-Jones, who calls herself Philippa TJ on-air will jump from University Radio Nottingham to the chart show, replacing Andrew Collins. (more)

RadioToday at Hospital Awards

The annual Hospital Broadcasting Awards were held last night at the Park Inn, Nottingham and proved once again to be a great success, recognising talent from across the UK. Nearly 300 delegates attended the event, which was hosted by BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood and Media Consultant Paul Robinson. (more)

BBC first to launch DRM trial in UK

The BBC is to launch a trial of Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) to find out whether the use of medium wave for digital radio is a practical option.As part of the trial, BBC Radio Devon will use DRM technology for a year from its existing medium-wave transmitter in Plymouth.An audience panel will be recruited and panel members will be given radios which are capable of receiving DRM as well as the existing FM and DAB services.The trial will be the first of its kind in the UK using medium-wave to provide DRM to UK listeners.John Allen, Head of New Services for BBC English Regions, said: "The trial will help us understand whether DRM has a role to play in the all-digital future for BBC Local Radio in the UK."Listeners to BBC Radio Devon on AM in Plymouth will have to retune their radio to FM or DAB to continue listening while the DRM trial takes place.The BBC has also announced plans to grow its network of DAB transmitters by ten, with most of the new services in operation by the end of April.Glasgow, Gwent, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk and the South Downs are among the areas that will benefit from increased digital radio coverage following today's announcement.All ten transmitters are being built and will be operated for the BBC by Arqiva.Jenny Abramsky said: "I'm delighted to be able to announce these new transmitters. They represent a real and worthwhile improvement to the coverage of our DAB digital radio network. It shows the BBC's continuing commitment to making our services available on DAB digital radio."
