BBC Radio 4 looks back at 40 years of BBC local radio

Tonight’s edition of the Archive Hour at 2000-2100 UTC on BBC Radio 4, presented by Libby Purves, looks back at 40 years of BBC local radio stations. Ramadan radio RSL’s deadline passes

The deadline to apply to Ofcom for an RSL (Restricted Service Licence) radio licence to cover the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan for 2008 has now passed, according to RadioToday.
Ofcom received a total of 71 applications, 16 of those coming from stations who would like to broadcast to the Bradford area.
Applications were also received for stations in Blackburn, Bolton, Bristol, Burton-on-Trent, Cardiff, Dudley, Dundee, Edinburugh, Glasgow, Halifax, Harrow, Hendon, Huddersfield, Keighley, Leeds, Leicester, London, Luton, Manchester, Middlesborough, Oldham, Peterborough, Preston, Reading, Sheffield, Slough, Sutton, Thornton Heath and Walsall.
Ofcom will decide in early 2008 which of the 71 applicants are successful. (more)

Jay Sean & Raghav new music airs on A Network

RnB artist Jay Sean will exclusively perform songs from his new album 'My Own Way' on the BBC Asian Network's Uni Tour '07.
After the success of the 2006 Uni Tour, Asian Network announces another ten date tour which will see its unique sound taken to Universities up and down the UK .
The tour kicks off Friday 28th September at University of Hertfordshire where Jay Sean will headline with support from H.Dhami and Mumzy, Swami and Asian Network DJs Bobby Friction, DJ Kayper and Sonny Ji who will play throughout the tour with appearances also from Panjabi Hit Squad.
Jay Sean had UK Chart success with his debut album, 'Me Against Myself' in 2004 as well as his singles like "Eyes on You" and "Stolen" which reached the Top 10. Jay Sean is also a big hit overseas in India where his first album sold over 2 million copies.
The Kings College date - Thursday 25th October will see Jay Sean perform a special LIVE album preview.
The Tour will see exclusive plays of much anticipated new material from Raghav who has seen widespread international chart success with Top 10 hits like "Can't Get Enough" and "Angel Eyes" as well as female urban artist Hard Kaur who is returning with a new album later this year entitled 'Supawoman'.
Lyrical pioneers Swami will showcase new material including their hit single "Hey Hey" which is getting major MySpace attention as well as heavy radio play. Their anticipated album 'Equalize' takes influences from North African and French hip-hop to the rap of the American East Coast.
Ones to watch this time around include British Asian Hip Hop acts Sona Family whose music is supported by Radio DJs Bobby Friction and Nihal, Bhangra artist Imran Khan and the Rishi Rich Showcase featuring H.Dhami and Mumzy. Rishi Rich is a pioneering producer famous for his mix of bhangra, Bollywood and urban beats. He has produced albums on the British-Asian music scene and has also made a mark on the mainstream charts, producing and remixing hits for Madonna, Britney Spears, Mary J Blige and Craig David.
Uni Tour 07 takes in Hertfordshire, Leeds, Middlesex, Surrey, Manchester, London, Leicester, Warwick, Kent and Sheffield. Full details of artists appearing is shown below.

Big John has been waking up South Yorkshire on Hallam FM for seven years this week – so he and his breakfast team are holding a birthday party for listeners at the The Oasis food Court in Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre! Hallam FM helps flood victims

The leaders of the four South Yorkshire Authorities - Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield have joined forces with Hallam FM's Big John at Breakfast to launch the South Yorkshire Flood Victim Support Appeal, with the aim of helping those hit by severe flooding this week. (more)

Changes at BBC Cambridgeshire

BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Antonia Brickell is heading back to Cambridge to take-over the afternoon show. Starting in April, other changes include Peterborough based breakfast presenter Andy Burrows presenting a new 9am -10am programme for the whole county. (more)

BBC Radio Sheffield is to launch a revised weekday schedule next week, lead by a new breakfast show with Toby Foster. Current host Antonia Brickell is leaving to join BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. Also, Rony Robinson moves to lunchtime, whilst Bob Ballard has extended his 'drivetime' show by one hour. (more)

Emap promotes Hallam boss

Emap has appointed Iain Clasper, managing director of Hallam FM and Magic AM to the new role of Big City Commercial Director. The new responsibilities will be in addition to his current role at the Sheffield stations.Iain will be working with the 32 stations in the network to provide support and co-ordination between them and the national radio sales teams at Emap Advertising. Complaint for BBC Sheffield

Just one complaint was received by Ofcom after a football phone-in on BBC Radio Sheffield broadcast a caller who was clearly heard as describing the goalkeeper of the home side in a non-pleasent way by using the F and C word. The listener who complained said that the language used was offensive.
In responce, the BBC said that it very much regretted the offence caused. The caller had spoken in reasonable terms when talking to the production team before being put on air. The caller had then exploited this opportunity by insulting the opposing team�s goalkeeper. (more)
