Ofcom awards six licences

Community Radio took another step forward today with the awarding of six more licences for community groups. The new stations, which are all given a licence for five years are located in Gwent, Swansea, Devon, Somerset and two in Cornwall. (more)
Market share rise for UKRD

Local radio operator UKRD has seen its RAJAR market share rise despite handing back the licence for Star Radio in Stroud and in spite of new commercial competition for Pirate FM in Cornwall in the shape of Atlantic FM. (more)
Radio veteran Mike Dickin dies

talkSPORT late-night radio phone-in host Mike Dickin has died in a car crash near his home in Cornwall. One of the great figures of speech broadcasting, Mike joined the then Talk Radio in 1995 and has been with the station ever since. (more)
New listeners for BBC local

Many of the local radio stations operated by the BBC around the UK have reported an increase in listeners with the latest RAJAR results.Amongst the stations with an increase in audience are Radio Oxford, Cornwall, Derby, Lancashire, and Gloucestershire. (more)
Cornwall Chapel to be Restored for TV Show

The Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel in West Cornwall has won a place in the final of the BBC Two programme Restoration Villages. 2 other projects missed out in the chance - the Rope Walk in West Coker, Somerset and Welcombe Barton in Devon. Structural problems a few years ago resulted in the grade 2 listed chapel closing - which was built in 1835. For 2006 the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has put £1.9m aside to help restore the final projects.. (more)
BBC Radio Derby Searches for County Flag

BBC Radio Derby's Breakfast show presenter, Andy Whittaker, has been on a quest to acquire a flag for the county of Derbyshire. Now the search is entering the final stages, and the shortlist of three final designs is unveiled for the first time on Friday morning (4th August). The search for a flag of Derbyshire began when Andy received an email from a listener visited Cornwall and remarked that the area had its own banner flying across the region and how the locals were obviously very proud of it.. Beautiful launch for Atlantic FM

Atlantic FM, the second commercial radio station for Cornwall has launched this morning at 7:30am after a long sequence of short music clips, which listeners can expect to hear on the station. The clips were pre-produced over the sound of crashing waves.
The first song played was U2's Beautiful Day, which was played straight after a new TM Century Jingle. The first song was chosen by a new listener called Warren who filled out a suggestion card at the Royal Cornwall Show recently. Mark Chapple (ex Bright 106.4) provided the first live voice on the station and welcomed listeners to a station with "more music". (more)
Atlantic FM set to hit the waves

There’s a hive of activity down at Wheal Kitty in St Agnes as the team behind Cornwall’s newest, freshest radio station, test and re-test their kit, refine their final plans and complete their rehearsals in their cutting edge studios. Atlantic FM goes live on air across Cornwall between the frequencies of 105.1-107 FM at 7.30am on Thursday 6th July and promises to deliver something for ‘one and all’ – reflecting Cornwall’s moto - after a very long time with only two main radio options. Cornwall boasts biggest hours

BBC Radio Cornwall has attracted 1,000 new listeners over the last year, according to the latest audience figures issued by Rajar. The figures show the station now has an average weekly audience of 152,000 listeners.
The survey also measures the average amount of time people spend listening to the station each week. Radio Cornwall's average is now the highest of any BBC local radio station across the UK with listeners clocking up 15.7 hours per week, which is two hours a week up since December 2005. (more)

More new stations for Arqiva

Arqiva has announced a further batch of 12-year Total Broadcast Contracts for new FM commercial radio stations.
In Cornwall, Atlantic FM will be broadcasting to the county from mid 2006. The Banbury licence was won by The Bear, part of the CN Group of smaller stations, and will provide a locally focused service in and around the town. 99.9 Radio Norwich, backed by the Tindle Group, will be focusing on the city of Norwich. The second Solent licence, won by CanWest-backed Original 106 FM, will provide an ‘adult alternative’ service aimed at the 40-59 year age range from transmitters on the Isle of Wight, in Bournemouth and in Winchester. Torbay and the surrounding area will have a full local service from Palm FM, a station wholly owned by the London Media Company, whose other interests include Sunrise Radio and the Time FM branded stations.
