Chris Moyles continues to add extra listeners to his BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, and his personal goal of over-taking Terry Wogan on Radio 2 is a step closer this quarter. Chris now has 7.7 million fans, compared to Terry's 8.1, bringing down the gap to just 382,000 listeners. (more)

BBC Radio 1 are negligent. We've got the proof, it's a Radio Today exclusive. Pete Tong deliberately mentioned there was a house party. In a house. Somewhere. And at some time.As you can imagine, over 2,000 people, probably all drug addicts or teenage mothers we imagine, turned up and wrecked the 21-bedroom manor house in Devon on Friday night. Raymond Bingham, a Drum and Bass DJ on BBC Radio 1 has been arrested for drug offences. Raymond, better known as Grooverider, was arrested at the Gulf emirate's airport on November 23rd. A small amount of cannabis was allegedly found in his possession. (more)

Another fake BBC Radio caller

The BBC has released a statement saying a fake caller was used during Jo Whiley's show at BBC Radio 1 on April 20th 2006. It happened during a pre-recorded segment of the show, and BBC bosses insist Jo had no idea the caller was the producer, rather than a geniune member of the audience. A number of staff members have been disiplined but no one has been fired over the incident. (more)

96.9 Viking FM is experiencing a baby boom after TWELVE members of staff have become new parents in the past two years - and there's still more to come! A massive 30% of Viking FM's workforce of just 40 staff has gone radio ga-ga while working at the Hull-based radio station.
Staff at Viking FM think there is something in the airwaves! During one week alone no less than three pregnancies were announced. The newest mother is 96.9 Viking FM's Breakfast Show presenter Sam Heywood, who's son Harry is three weeks old. Sam was back on-air just 42 minutes after giving birth to tell listeners she was a new mummy. Sam's co-host Mark Somers said "Sam's really impatient so it's typical that she was back on air so quickly." (more)

Multi-award winning radio indie All Out Productions is celebrating its biggest ever series of commissions for BBC Radio 1. This follows the company’s first ever commission to produce audio content for Channel 4 Radio.
The Manchester-based indie has been commissioned to produce six new half-hour documentary programmes, five to be broadcast during Steve Lamacq’s Lamacq Live show starting from the 24th of July, and one during the station’s hugely successful Sunday Surgery later this year. (more)

Colin Murray will present a brand new music show, Monday to Thursday from 10.00pm, on which he will be playing music that reflects the wide ranging specialist tastes of Radio 1's young audience and will focus on all of the most exciting and exhilarating aspects of youth culture including a regular documentary feature. The European Media Forum, part of the independent research institute the European Policy Forum, says the move would ease pressure on licence payers and boost the commercial radio sector. In the week when BBC Radio 1 is crowned Station of the Year in the Sony Awards, the latest RAJAR results show a loss of 560,000 listeners in the last three months.
Audiences fell from 10.29m to 9.73m in the last quarter. Breakfast show presenter Chris Moyles, who scooped the Entertainment Award at the Sonys, lost 300,000 listeners during the same period, but is still 130,000 up on last year. No mention was made, at least in the first couple of hours of his show about the new figures. (more)

The Sony Radio Academy Awards have been handed out at Grosvenor House, Park Lane in London. Paul Gambaccini hosted the event which was attended by radio industry professionals from around the UK.
In the commercial sector, a fantastic night for Emap's Kerrang! 105.2 as they take home no fewer than four Gold awards - Chris Moyles won his first Gold after 16 years of broadcasting for The Entertainment Award - BBC Radio 1 won Station of the Year - Zane Lowe took home two Gold awards and BBC Radio News Teams cleared up in a range of news awards. The BBC Radio Player had a record month in March 2006 with more than 20 million hours of online listening and 12 million on demand requests, illustrating the enduring popularity of radio streaming in the podcasting world. BBC Radio 1 led the way with four million hours of live listening and more than 87 million page impressions through a record 3.5 million unique user agents.
Its success was due in part to the troubled love-life of a girl named Laura. A regular feature on the Scott Mills show, Laura's Diary, spawned One Night with Laura and generated 11.8 million page impressions. (more)

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend, which kicks off the UK festival season this summer, is coming to Dundee across the weekend of 13 and 14 May 2006.
Major artists including Pink, Primal Scream, Keane, Sugababes and The Streets will play to 30,000 people at Camperdown Park during two days of live bands and world class DJs. The event will be broadcast on Radio 1 all weekend. (more)

BBC Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Moyles plans to release the secrets of his success in his autobiography.
A report suggests that he started writing his book last year and that he is doing it for "ego and money". He told the Daily Record: "I'm writing a book about me, It's an autobiography. It might be a diary actually. (more)
Ofcom advertise Oxford licence

Ofcom have today invited applications for a licence to provide an FM commercial radio service to cover Oxford and South Oxfordshire.
RadioToday.co.uk currently know of two groups who will be applying for the licence - Ridge FM (backed by Milestone Radio Group) and More FM who have ran two RSL trail services and are working with CN Group to apply for the licence. (more)
