Dr Raj Persaud faces being struck off
From Biz Asia. Posted June 20 2008, 5.20pm
Celebrity psychiatrist Dr Raj Persaud faces being struck off after the General Medical Council ruled that his fitness to practise was impaired. A GMC panel ruled yesterday that he had brought his profession into disrepute after he admitted passing off other scholars' work as his own for a book and several articles he wrote. The panel decided that his actions meant his fitness to practise was impaired. It will now decide whether to strike him off the medical register. The doctor, famed for his appearances on the television chat show This Morning and on BBC Radio 4's All In The Mind programme, admitted plagiarising the work of other experts. But he had denied his actions were dishonest and liable to bring his profession into disrepute. Dr Persaud was accused of plagiarising material for his book following a Sunday Times investigation in 2006. The book was an anthology of the "100 most sick people in the history of psychiatry" and was intended to revive an interest in psychiatric patients' case histories. Chunks of prose, apparently written by Dr Persaud, were actually the work of other authors. He failed to attribute the so-called "stolen words". Dr Persaud said that at the time he believed he had sufficiently acknowledged other authors' work. He obtained permission to quote them in his book and included their names in the book's acknowledgements section. He told the GMC: "I realise I should have been much more careful when I started writing the book. "At the time, given the stress I was under, given the deadlines and my other work, I thought I was adequately attributing work." Article from Sky News (more)

The decline of MTV: internet killed the video star
From The Independent. Posted June 6 2008, 12.00am
It was a seminal moment in the history of popular culture. On 1 August 1981, MTV launched in America with the simple words: "Ladies and Gentlemen... Rock and Roll." The phrase was followed by a montage of the Apollo 11 Moon landings. While the pictures of Neil Armstrong bounding across the lunar landscape conveyed the channel's imperialistic ambitions, its first video, played seconds later, impressed its disdain of subtlety. It was Video Killed the Radio Star, by The Buggles. (more)

ZEE-STAR 'Antakshari' war of words over!
From Biz Asia. Posted October 9 2007, 9.47pm
The Bombay high court, in a verdict on the ZEE TV versus STAR TV battle over the latter's music show 'Antakshari — The Great Challenge', restrained STAR from "passing off" its popular programme as the original 'Antakshari'. The court, however, held that there was no violation of copyright by STAR as charged by ZEE and that the word 'Antakshari' could be used by STAR in its show. In other words, the show may have to change its format. The order has been stayed till 4th November to enable Star to go in appeal before a division bench. This means the show can continue on air as it is. The legal song and dance was initiated by ZEE Entertainment earlier this year against STAR and programme director Gajendra Singh for allegedly violating its copyright over the show and for coming up with a similar concept note. ZEE's 'Antakshari' show was also conceptualised and directed by Singh who was the channel's programme director until last year. ZEE, through its counsel Janak Dwarkadas, had raised several issues including saying that a concept note could be treated as a 'literary work' and had copyright value under the law. He also argued that given ZEE 'Antakshari's' popularity—it ran for ten years and is mentioned in the Limca Book of World Records as the longest running show by one director—Star, by calling its show 'Antakshari - The Great Challenge', was trying to "pass off" the show as the original 'Antakshari'. Justice Shiavax Vazifdar of the Bombay high court while deciding the suit came to three conclusive findings. He held that the existence of the 'concept note' has not been established by ZEE and thus there's been no infringement of copyright by STAR or Gajendra Singh. The judge also held that there was no infringement of cinematography of ZEE's original show by STAR. The court, however, noted that Singh had been an employee of ZEE and not an independent producer/director for the show. Sameer Rao, Vice-president, STAR, had opposed all claims made by ZEE and in an affidavit filed in court stated that its show was completely different from that of ZEE. He denied that ZEE could claim any "proprietary rights'' with respect to the word 'Antakshari' in connection with a television game show based on the traditional antakshari. He also denied that ZEE had any copyright over the show or any alleged literary work about the show. Star's basic argument was that ideas can't be copyrighted and denied that it had violated any copyright in the television show. STAR's contention is also that it had in 2000-2002 launched and broadcast a show called 'Chalti ka naam Antakshari', which had become very popular and hence wanted to produce another programme based on the 'antakshari' format but with unique features. Ismail Darbar's words cause a stir on ZEE show
From Biz Asia. Posted June 16 2007, 11.28am
Ismail Durbar has done it again. He has ended up insulting one more legend of the music world on ZEE TV's talent hunt show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa'. In the episode being shown tonight in India (tomorrow in the UK), Ismail targets composing genius Khayyam by challenging his decision. "A row arose between Ismail and Khayyam saab when the latter eliminated a contestant Jyoti from the competition. Ismail claimed Jyoti had sung well enough and that it was a wrong decision by Khayyam saab," said a ZEE TV spokesperson. "Ismail also mentioned that it was as wrong for Ashaji (Bhosle) to have eliminated another contestant, Sarika. Khayyam saab was naturally very hurt. He said he thought Ismail was insulting him, his music and his experience of so many years. He was very upset by his remarks. But Ismail was firm and got into a serious argument with Khayyam saab." When contacted, Khayyam tried to underplay the ugly incident. "Ismail is young and talented. He shouldn't have said what he did. But we sorted it out. I think Ismail's job is to guide the contestants. And one has to be very objective about the judgement," Khayyam told reporters. "But often one gets emotional about issues, like a contestant from Pakistan... or a female contestant from the US who has left her child behind... These are emotional matters," he added. Khayyam, however, said that one can't be emotional while judging a contestant. "And after a judge gives his decision, no one can challenge his judgement. Ismail challenged my judgement and it was wrong. However I'd say he got emotional. He shouldn't have used the words he did. Having said this, I must say Ismail and his students are very talented. When this incident happened, my colleague on the judges' seat Rajesh Roshan was abroad. So I was alone and, therefore, had a double responsibility." Commenting upon his equation with his other fellow judges, he said: "My relations with all the judges go back a long way. Bappi Lahiri's father, Ismail's father, Himesh Reshammiya's father have worked with me. And Vishal and Shekhar are like my sons. I'd say there're no losers and winners on the show. They're all so good." Some time ago, Ismail made a mockery of Lata Mangeshkar by recording a song by her for a film that never got made. Lata is still waiting for Ismail to get back to her. On 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa', which he judges every week, Ismail has been regularly crossing swords with Asha Bhosle. Article from ZEE News (more)

LBC complaints received by Ofcom
From Radio Today. Posted September 4 2006, 8.00pm
In the latest issue of the Broadcast Bulletin from Ofcom, a report of complaints against Iain Lee's LBC programme was published. Two listeners complained that the word c*nt was used by a caller to the show during a late night phone-in on July 30. Prior to receiving any formal complaints from listeners, LBC had already alerted Ofcom to the incident. The broadcaster explained that the call had been dumped (the station operates a permanent 7 second delay which allows it to dump unsuitable material). Unfortunately, although the delay unit had previously been tested and found to be working correctly, as a result of a technical fault, the dump facility removed the offending word from the DAB transmission, but not the FM transmission. When the problem was identified, the presenter apologised for any offence and did not take any further calls to air while the matter was investigated. (more)
