The controversial award of the Plymouth FM licence to Australian bank Macquarie reached the House of Commons on Tuesday, where a leading minister was accused of 'passing the buck' by a local MP. Plymouth MP Linda Gilroy said the win by Diamond FM had provoked 'consternation, disbelief, astonishment and downright anger' amongst the residents and businesses of the city. Broadcast minister James Purnell said Gilroy had made an 'extremely powerful case', in that Ofcom's decision had been unpopular locally, however the decision was not a matter for the Government. From Radio Today. Posted March 20 2006, 11.48am
In one of the most controversial licence awards to date by Ofcom, the awarding of the Plymouth licence has been explained in a document released today. One of the main reasons Ofcom awarded the licence to Diamond FM (Radio UK Holdings Limited - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Macquarie Bank) was their proposals to broaden listener choice more than any of the other proposals. It felt that Diamonds mix of classic rock from the last five decades with relatively low speech, as well as its promise to play youth-focused alternative rock during evening output, would broaden choice more than any of the other proposals.
