Sunrise Radio begins DJ names registering
From Biz Asia. Posted September 17 2008, 10.46pm
In an unusual move, the UK's popular Sunrise Radio has gone on and registered over ten DJ names to prevent other stations using the same. The decision to trademark fifteen of its popular DJ names may have been taken as some have become synonymous to the station and somewhat a brand of their own. Amongst the names that have been submitted for registration are Ameet Roshan, Amar Grewal, Jaz Sidhu, Raj Shukla, Suzi Mann, Reena Kapoor, Sonia Dutta, Sandy Khanna, Asif Choudary, Sunny Landa, Deepa Rai, Rani Gill, Ruby Raza, Shama Sood and Sheena Khan. Recently, BizAsia.co.uk reported how the "real" Suzi Mann was removed from her 'Bollywood Top 20' show and replaced with a "new" Suzi Mann. We hear, the second Suzi Mann has been given her marching orders too and it remains to be seen whether a third Suzi Mann will take over the show on Saturday or another alias. Sunrise Radio is known for giving new names to its presenters. In the past, Anushka formerly of Club Asia was given a new identity as Deepa Rai. Moreover, when the real Sonia Dutta left the station a few years ago, Sunrise retained her name and handed the duty of "Sonia Dutta" to another DJ. Similarly we’ve lost count of the varied ‘Bossman’s’ and ‘Paul Shah’s’ that have stepped foot at their studios. What is your view on this? Is the name really that much of a big deal? Do you think Sunrise Radio is deceiving its listeners by making him/her believe the DJ still exists just because the name “lives on” even after the original presenter has quit or been fired? Discuss on our Facebook page here. Related link: Biz Bitch - Weekly Column (more)

UK radio to go completely digital by 2020
From Biz Asia. Posted June 24 2008, 3.18pm
UK radio services should be migrated on to digital audio broadcasting (DAB) by 2020, according to the Digital Radio Working Group's (DRWG) interim report. The government-backed industry panel recommended the establishment of a timetable for the migration of all UK radio from analogue to digital and said that this should be completed between 2015 and 2020. However, in the medium term, the group recommends migrating all national, regional and large local stations to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), with FM continuing to be used by small local and community radio stations. The DRWG does not recommend setting a date for the switchover to digital radio now. Instead, it recommends a timetable for migration is set out, which is dependent on progress against the agreed criteria. The group's initial assessment is that migration could be completed by 2020. Chairman of the DRWG Barry Cox said: "At the end of May this year, sales of DAB sets exceeded seven million. We believe radio must have a digital future and that this will benefit both listeners and industry. Audiences will be able to enjoy increased functionality and more choice of channels, while the industry will no longer have to sustain the increased transmission costs of broadcasting on multiple platforms. "If these benefits are to be achieved, then action must be taken to address the significant challenges which threaten the future growth of the market. There is a great deal to be done to address these issues, and I hope that this interim report will stimulate debate on how to achieve a digital future." The group, set up in November 2007, has been looking at the barriers to the growth of digital radio and the conditions needed to allow digital platforms to become the main means of delivering radio. As part of its work, four sub-groups were set up to consider issues such as the mechanisms for growth, technology, coverage and European harmonisation. New owners of Virgin Radio back digital radio
From Biz Asia. Posted June 13 2008, 11.14pm
The Times of India group (TIML Golden Square, a wholly owned subsidiary of Times group), the new owners of Virgin Radio, says it is "more committed to DAB than anyone else", according to Broadcast Now. Chief executive Clive Dickens says that both the City and the industry at large was responsible for the platform’s negative press. "The industry has been bad at marketing DAB because the City decided it was an expensive long-term operation," says Dickens. "This, in turn, meant senior people at plcs had to publicly denounce it." The Times Of India Group acquired the Virgin Radio Holdings Ltd and its subsidiaries in the UK, earlier this month, for a phenomenal £53.2 million from SMG Plc. New community Asian radio licence for Walsall
From Biz Asia. Posted May 24 2008, 2.41pm
Birmingham's Walsall area will be welcoming a new Asian radio station later this year, we can confirm. The station called 'Ambur Radio' will be managed by Priya Singh, who herself is a prominent media personality in the West Midlands area. Prior to setting up Ambur Radio, Singh worked at Radio XL from start and then followed that with the launch of her own digital station Apna Radio. Radio programme looks at history of Asians in police force
From Biz Asia. Posted March 11 2008, 9.55pm
A programme on BBC Radio Scotland will chart the history of Asian and BME (Black and Ethinc Minority) officers in the Scottish Police Forces. Producer and presenter Ravi Sagoo looks at 40 years since Dilawer Singh joined Strathclyde Police Force in 1968 making him Scotland's first Asian police officer. The programme will show that joining as an Asian was a challenge in being accepted after he was questioned by a superior about wearing a turban, alongside racism in the line of duty. Ravi Sagoo is a former BBC new talent winner and has been a regular presenter on BBC Radio Scotland across music and sport and also on The BBC Asian Network. He also has the third series of the Asian Urban music programme â Ravi Sagoo & Tigerstyle Presentsâ ¦â airing this summer on BBC Radio Scotland. Could Sunrise Radio national get delayed?
From Biz Asia. Posted March 7 2008, 10.36pm
According to reports this week, Channel 4 executives are effectively split over the broadcaster's digital radio venture. 4 Digital Group consortium led by Channel 4 was awarded the second national DAB multiplex licence. The consortium had proposed to provide ten linear national services including that of Sunrise Radio. However, MediaGuardian has said that a leading executive at the group was split, with chief executive, Andy Duncan and director of new business and corporate development, Nathalie Schwarz, who are advocates of the project, looking increasingly isolated. The programme commissioning team believe the radio venture will drain Channel 4 of up to £100m, which is needed to bolster its programme budget at a tough point when the channel is about to launch its campaign for public assistance. Senior channel executives accordingly held a meeting last week to consider options and the board, chaired by Luke Johnson, is to take a hard look at the policy decision to invest in digital radio at its April meeting. It looks increasingly unlikely that the new national multiplex consisting of channels like Sunrise Radio is launching this year. In other DAB digital radio news, Financial Times has reported the possibility of BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4 and Five Live gradually switching to DAB only, albeit over a long time period. Asian radio industry gives DAB backing
From Biz Asia. Posted February 12 2008, 10.25pm
DAB radio IS the future, say key players in the UK Asian radio sector. The industry is already split over DAB. Is it the cornerstone of the future of digital radio, or is it a hugely expensive white elephant that has already been overtaken by rival delivery platforms such as the web? Earlier this week, GCap Media announced it is to pull back from digital radio to help double profits as part of an overhaul which will see digital radio brands such as theJazz and Planet Rock close down (it has already closed down Core, Life and Disney). BizAsia.co.uk has spoken to the key figures of Asian radio industry who all unanimously supported DAB. Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Audio & Music "The BBC has been at the forefront of digital radio for more than ten years and remains fully committed to DAB and the other digital delivery platforms. There's an exciting future for radio. It is central to the lives of huge numbers of people who listen every week. "Recent RAJAR listening figures show that nearly 5.6 million people tune into BBC Radio via DAB each week and the BBC's digital-only networks continue to grow, with two networks – 6 Music and BBC 7 – recently posting record listening figures." Raj Baddhan, Station Manager, ZEE Radio “As a new player in the UK Asian DAB market, we are positive our carefully sifted programming will attract new listeners to digital radio. Programming, packaging and the marketing of the station are factors that can determine the popularity of one station; we aim to deliver on all three. Watch this space." John Ogden, Director, Club Asia "This is a very difficult time for Commercial stations who have been heavily exposed in DAB. Many groups pursued a "land grab" when DAB was launched. They are now realising that the costs of maintaining present simulcast services are largely unsustainable. "However, Commercial Radio is questioning the viability of DAB just as interest among retailers, manufacturers and listeners has never been higher. 23% of homes have DAB digital radio and 30% of homes are listening to radio on a digital platform. However, those listeners clearly demand more than a simulcast of what's already available on their old AM or FM frequencies. We remain excited about our role in the new Channel 4 led multiplex. It is clear to us at Club Asia that DAB has a role in a fast converging UK media industry. DAB is part of a bouquet of opportunities offered to listeners in the future. Listening via the internet and mobile technology will complete the picture. The key is providing new and exciting services that listeners can't get elsewhere" Surjit Singh Ghuman, Director, Asian FX and Panjab Radio "Panjab Radio has proved itself as a leading brand on digital radio with its niche programming. Once again we’re doing the same with Asian FX by offering an entity, which is individual but also something, which listeners have shown interest in. I’m hoping we can turn around the negative press DAB has been receiving of late by shaking up the market with our Asian FX, just like we did with Panjab Radio." Sunrise Radio, which is launching nationally on DAB early next-year refused to provide us with a quote on their plans. 'Desi DNA & BBC Asian Network Presents' introduces the first of two programmes from a specially recorded showcase presented by Adil Ray and Bobby Friction. On Wednesday 13th February (23:20) there are live performances and backstage interviews from artists including Danish rap outfit Outlandish, resurgent R and B singer Jay Sean, currently gaining chart success for his new single Ride It and a rising crop of new talent including exotic electro folk sitar player and singer Bishi and Bhangra DJs Tigerstyle, making their TV debut. Recorded in December exclusively for 'Desi DNA' and the BBC Asian Network at London’s Scala Theatre, digital TV viewers can watch full performances from Jay Sean and Outlandish by pressing the red button from any BBC channel. The second 'Desi DNA & BBC Asian Network Presents' which airs on BBC Two on Wednesday 20th February, introduces more exclusive recordings from the Scala gig. The programme features live performances from Bhangra progressives Swami, more from Jay Sean, and hip hop outfit Sona Family.
