Five FM & Citybeat Favourites in Northern Ireland

The Breakfast Show on Five FM with Shane Pearce and the Drivetime Show on Citybeat with Lisa McCormick have been voted the Best in Northern Ireland in a poll run by Merry Media.Over the past couple of months, Merry Media has been moving from region to region across the UK to find the best breakfast and drivetime shows on the radio with votes coming from within the radio industry as well as businesses and listeners.Shane Pearce came top of the breakfast poll with his show on Five FM with 16% of the votes, second place was Maurice Jay on U105 and in third place on the poll was Mark and Dave at Citybeat.. Ofcom explains Newry award

Five FM won the new local commercial radio licence for Newry last week - and today Ofcom explains why. As usual, Ofcom said it would be likely to place particular emphasis on the ability of each applicant to maintain its proposed service for the duration of the licence period. It was pointed out that Five FM would benefit from being part of a commonly-owned ‘cluster’ of local stations alongside Six FM in Cookstown and Seven FM in Ballymena. Ofcom also noted the executive management team’s track-record in operating small-scale commercial radio services in the Republic of Ireland. (more)

Five FM win Newry licence

Five FM, backed by River Media have won the local radio licence for Newry, Northern Ireland. The station will broadcast a music and information station for all adults in the Newry and Mourne area with a strong commitment to local content. The new station aims to make a large investment in content and high quality programming with a heavy emphasis on local news, sport, music presented by high profile broadcasters drawn from within the community. River Media also own Mid 106 after CN Group sold the station earlier this year. (more)

Two apply for Newry licence

It's a two horse race for the new Newry local radio licence. Two companies are proposing a new station to serve Newry and Mourne in Northern Ireland. Five FM, backed by River Media (who recently bought Mid 106 FM from CN Group) are proposing a music and information station for all adults in the Newry and Mourne area with a strong commitment to local content. Quay 100 aims to be a local radio station catering for all adults (primarily targeted at the 35+ age group), focussing on local news, issues and information relevant to life today in Newry and Mourne; also featuring the best music from the last four decades, modern country music and specialist programming content.
